The Museum Hotel and St. Pierre Church

I know I said yesterday that we are done with museums for a while, but when we were at the Antakya Archeological Museum we had bought the combined ticket which included access to the Museum Hotel and St. Pierre Church along with the Archeological Museum.

Max is parked right behind the Museum Hotel, so that was the first place we headed Wednesday morning.

I am a little bit in awe of where we are right now...

Yesterday's drive took us from north of the big port city of Iskenderun to the valley city of Antakya.

Antakya is located in Hatay province, which until 1938 was part of Syria, and the area still feels more like Syria than Turkiye. Not that I know what Syria is like, but the area definitely has more of a middle eastern feel to it than what we have experienced elsewhere in Turkiye.

And in fact, we are now only 20 kms (12 miles) from the Syria border.

Not every day is a good day

And yesterday was certainly not one of the better ones, but in the end we are fine and it's just another adventure.

We packed up from our beautiful free campsite and set off at about 10:30am. I decided on a backroads route so that we would avoid having to return to the big city of Adana. The road wasn't in great condition, but I would rather go slowly that way than have to deal with the traffic through the city.

We had a beautiful first day of Spring!

What a gorgeous day we had yesterday. Blue sky and sunshine! It could have still been a little warmer, with a high of only 10C (50F), but there was no wind at all and with the sun shining it was really quite nice.

So we left Max behind and set off on a 10 km (6.2 mile) hike to try to get to the nearest high point.

Booked the rest of our flights, and found the perfect free camping spot!

It's a really tough call booking flights this far in advance. Especially for summer travel which is expensive to begin with. Then add in constantly changing Covid restrictions that are wildly different in each country, and increasing fuel prices, and it's hard to know what to do. But, I'm overall happy with what me managed to book.

So, we fly back to Canada August 5th from Amsterdam. We arrive in Montreal with an 18 hour layover before our flight to Calgary.

Saturday, March 19, 2022

We are sticking with our original plan

We didn't really do very much yesterday, except we spent a lot of time with Duygu  and Timmy talking about the many things to see and do in this area, as well as talking about their road trip to India and looking at some photos and telling stories.

Although, Ruth did go with them to the fabric guy to buy the material for the covers for Max's dinette seats. I was feeling the need for an afternoon nap, so I stayed behind and did just that!

Friday, March 18, 2022

Well, that was an interesting day!

We were up and on the road at 6:30am Thursday morning. We were headed just across the city, but wanted to beat any rush hour traffic, and we did a pretty good job of it.

I had been looking at other listings on the park4night app for the city of Adana and came across one from fellow motorhome travelers who live in Adana. They like to welcome others to park at their home and visit with them. We contacted them, and they invited us over.

Adana Museum, and a great day for a bike ride

We left Max parked up by the river and walked the 3 kms (1.8 miles) over to the Adana Museum. Other than the riverside, this was the first we had seen of the city itself. Adana is a modern city, very clean, and with lots of green park space. For a big city, we were pretty impressed.

We arrived at the museum and there were a few school buses with groups of kids, which is not surprising. We paid our 15 lira ($1.30 CAD, $1.00 USD) each entrance fee and went in with a large group of them.

Into the big city of Adana

We packed things up at the free campground in Tarsus. It had become quite busy there as three Turkish rigs traveling together showed up around 9:30pm Monday night. I think all the spots were full so we're glad we parked well out of the way.

Thanks to the municipality of Tarsus for providing this free campground. Always good to be able to get back on the road with full batteries and water, and an empty toilet tank!

More wandering around Tarsus

Three nights in Tarsus is almost one too many, but we still managed to keep ourselves busy yesterday with a few more interesting sights to see in the central area.

Fortunately, we had blue sky and sunshine, with a high of about 13C (55F).

Monday, March 14, 2022

The city of Tarsus has been inhabited uninterrupted for 9,000 years!

Sunday was an abnormally chilly day. Only an overcast high of 7C (45F), and down to the freezing mark at night. Next winter we are going somewhere warmer, even if it's only for a month or two!

We bundled up as much as we could and set off to explore the old central part of the city of Tarsus.

Inverter gone bad!

The other morning, I turned on our inverter and immediately heard sparks. Uh oh. That's not good. I shut it down right away, and tried it again. This time, I left it on despite the sparking, and within about five seconds it shut down automatically and went into fault mode.

The night before, it had been working perfectly. What happened between then, and the time I turned it on the next morning? Who knows. Electronics don't last forever. But it should last more than 9 months!

Saturday, March 12, 2022

Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts

We left our quiet overnight spot at the Men of Rock parking area and drove back down to the main coastal highway heading east towards the big city of Mersin (pop 1 million).

Not many cars on the road, and we think that might have something to do with the price of fuel. When we arrived in Turkiye January 22, we paid 13.5 lira per liter. Today, it is now 23 lira per liter. Yes, I know that is happening all over the world, but fuel was already expensive for the Turkish people at 13.5 lira per liter.

Friday, March 11, 2022

Well, that was an adventure!

What a day we had! Keep reading to the bottom for the best part!

We had a totally silent night parked at the ruins of the ancient city of Olba. But it was chilly... -1C (30F) when we woke up. A good reminder of why we've been staying on the coast! Fortunately, things are starting to warm up and the next month will make a big difference. They are calling for sunny highs around 20C (68F) by the end of next week.

We left Max in his spot and went out exploring. Nobody around but us and some goats and sheep!

Thursday, March 10, 2022

Fantastic Gilindire Cave, and up into the mountains

First thing we did was to go for a short walk around the park at the beach where we had overnighted. It's a really pretty bay, and I'm sure the place is packed with tent campers and picnickers on a summer weekend.

But yesterday morning, there was just us, one couple in a tent, and a guy picking up trash.

Wednesday, March 9, 2022

We have decided we are not going to Cyprus on this trip

We are now only 60 kms (37 miles) from the ferry port that would have taken us to North Cyprus. So we needed to make a decision.

We weighed the pros and cons. If we went to North Cyprus, the only real benefit would be that we would be able to extend the spring season so that our remaining time in Turkiye would be warmer.

The fantastic mosaics at the ancient city of Anamurium, Turkiye

The ancient city of Anamurium dates to between the 1st and the 7th centuries. I always have to think about that a little bit. Of course in Canada, anything old is maybe 300 or 400 years, at most. So when you come across structures that are still standing after 1,500 or 2,000 years, it's difficult to comprehend.

We had no plans to visit Anamurium until Ruth did a little bit of research to find out what there was to see along our route. And it turns out there is a lot to see! In fact, it was one of the better ruins sites.

Summer plans... booked another flight!

Sunday was a rain day. They had called for showers on and off, but it rained pretty steady most of the day. We didn't get out of the motorhome for a walk until around 5:00pm!

So we played some backgammon and yahtzee, and did some computer time. We want to get back to Canada this summer, so I did some searching looking at flight possibilities.

Sunday, March 6, 2022

Another busy day, and a feast for lunch!

Lots of exploring to do in this area, and it was another nice day. Plus, it's an easy bike riding area with a good network of bike paths.

So I got the bikes off and we went for a ride. First destination was the ancient fortress of Selinus.

Saturday, March 5, 2022

Yep, this will do for a couple of nights!

We got up at 7:00am and hit the road right away Friday morning. Two reasons for this... first, it's a good way to warm up Max's interior without using propane, and second, we wanted to get out of the big city of Alanya before the traffic got heavy.

And we did... there was hardly any traffic on the road.

Friday, March 4, 2022

That was a busy day!

And a much better one than the last few, because the sun was shining and we were able to get out do stuff!

We needed to find a laundry. There were a few listings in the big touristy city of Alanya (pop 300,000), so we packed up early and drove the half hour or so into the city.

Thursday, March 3, 2022

Life goes on

We are fine, thanks. We've received a few messages of concern because we are geographically fairly close to the action, so to speak. And yes, we are following the headlines and are aware of what's going on in the world.

But we don't worry so much about "what if", so we continue with our plans, for now.

Wednesday, March 2, 2022

Not much point in moving on

Another wet overcast day on Tuesday, but at least we managed to find a two hour window where we got out for decent walk.

Today is supposed to be worse, with pretty much non stop rain, and a total accumulation of more than two inches. We were going to move on just for the sake of moving on, but I think we've decided to just wait it out. We have electricity and a good strong cellular internet connection.

Train trip and Cyprus update

Yesterday evening, we published our February expense report. If you missed it, you can read it here

A few weeks ago, we told you about an overnight scenic train ride that we wanted to do between Ankara and Kars, or the reverse. Tickets are really hard to get, but we put in our request hoping that we might get some around the end of February when we were in Antalya area and we could have flown from Antalya to either Ankara or Kars to meet the train.

February Expenses

Had we not done those medical checkups and bought me a new pair of hiking boots, February would have been an all time record low month. Of course keeping in mind that February only has 28 days, but still!

We spent a total of $1,884 CAD ($1,487 USD, €1,322), but our actual living expenses were less than half of that!

Staying at our first official Turkish campground!

We got on the road around 8:00am so that we could take advantage of the early Sunday morning lack of traffic in order to get ourselves out of the city. We took the coastal route, which is a little slower going but we had done the faster route in the car when we were here in December 2020 and it was not a scenic drive through a lot of industrial areas.

The coastal route in this area between Antalya and Alanya is loaded with big resort hotels... one after the other.

Another Senior Nomads lunch, and my new hiking boots arrived!

We drove over to Vera and Bob's apartment and found a parking spot really close by. They offered to let us use their washing machine and so we did some laundry and had nice hot showers!

Then when we the laundry was hung up to dry, we walked over to the same restaurant where we had lunch with the other Senior Nomads group last Tuesday.

Maybe we'll give it up in twenty years or so

We took a rare day off from writing the blog. We didn't have anything to write about! Thursday was a wet, rainy day, and we had done a lot of walking the previous three days so we simply took a day off from that as well!

We're still waiting here in Antalya for the hiking boots that I ordered to show up. We didn't really want to drive anywhere, and there were a lot of puddles on the nearby bike trail. We ended up contacting Bob and Vera, the Australian couple who we had met the other day.

Thursday, February 24, 2022

It's an odd feeling to have no plans, but we have some ideas

Normally when we travel, we have some sort of deadline. Even if that deadline might be four or five months out, which of course gives us quite a bit of flexibility. But right now, we feel like we don't really have to be anywhere, and it's a bit of an odd feeling.

We do want to go back to Canada this summer for maybe a month or so, but we aren't counting on that happening in the current travel environment. If it happens, then it will be a fairly last minute decision. If it doesn't happen, we have lots of other options.

New hiking boots!

We had always been fans of Merrell hiking boots until the last couple of pairs we bought that didn't last as long as we thought they should have. So on October 10, 2019 we each bought a new pair of Oboz hiking boots.

Well they are now due to be replaced. In fact, they've been due for a month or two now and we've been actively looking for new ones. But, we're pretty happy with how long the Oboz boots lasted, and in fact we would be happy to buy that brand again.

Medical test results

We don't often talk about our medical issues because 1) we really don't have any, and 2) when we do talk about things medical, everyone becomes an arm chair doctor.

But, we spent much of the day yesterday with the doctor, and we don't have anything else to talk about so we might as well tell you the whole story!

Monday, February 21, 2022

A nice lunch, gluten free treats, and a funny story!

We figured on a forty minute walk to get to the restaurant where we were meeting some of the "Senior Nomads" facebook group, and timed it perfectly, arriving right at 11:30pm.

There was Bob and Vera from Australia, Thomas and Georganna from California, and Matt and Avic from Colorado.

Eye doctor results

It was a little chilly yesterday morning, and we didn't know what the route would be like for cycling, so we decided to walk to our 10:00am eye doctor appointment. It turns out that it would have been no problem to ride our bikes... there wasn't much traffic on a Saturday morning, and there were quite a few sections that had bicycle only lanes.

But it was only 6.5 kms (4 miles) each way, so we had no problem walking it in an hour.

Hiking in Göynük Canyon, and into the big city of Antalya

We slept Thursday night at the Göynük Canyon parking lot. Total peace and quiet... it actually would have been good for a two night stop except that we had to get to Antalya for our eye doctor appointment on Saturday morning.

This whole area has a lot of trails, and the famous Lycian Way trail goes through this area as well. I had seen a cave marked on the map, so we decided to hike up there first.

Friday, February 18, 2022

The abandoned Eco Dream Club Resort

One of the stops we wanted to make yesterday was at the very strange Eco Dream Club Resort. There are a lot of all inclusive style resorts along this part of Turkiye's coastline. They're very quiet at this time of year, and in fact many of them totally close up during the winter and re-open in March.

But there is one big resort here that closed up in 2014, and never re-opened. The abandoned Naturland Holiday Area Eco Dream Club Resort.

Thursday, February 17, 2022

Made another doctor appointment

We have our ophthalmologist appointment on Saturday morning. That is why we are heading to Antalya fairly quickly.

Regular readers will remember that we had refractive lens exchange surgery done here in Turkey back in late December of 2020. You can read all the details here. We are going to see our ophthalmologist just for a checkup since we are in the area.

Views above Kas, Turkiye

When we had been in Kas in the fall of 2020, we had done a hike up the mountain behind the town. It is part of the Lycian Way hiking trail which runs about 500 kms (300 miles) along the southern coast. We wanted to continue further along that trail to see what there was to see, so we headed up the same mountain again yesterday.

The weather has continued to be perfect! Sunshine, blue skies, and temperature about 18C (66F).

Tuesday, February 15, 2022

Beautiful southern coastline

This week is going to go by quickly, as we have to be in Antalya by Saturday morning for our eye doctor appointment. We did that on purpose though, otherwise we wouldn't get through this area fast enough!

Part of our goal on this Turkish trip is to see some of the area east of Antalya towards the Syrian border and if we're going to do that we have to get a move on. So booking the eye doctor for Saturday gives us the push we need.

The ancient city of Pinara, Turkiye

Sunday is market day in Calis Beach, so we walked over with Aly and Martin at about 10:00am and did our weekly fruits and vegetables shopping. When things are so cheap, it's actually fun to go out and do the shopping!

After that, we needed to get going, so we said our goodbyes. Much thanks to Aly and Martin for looking after us, and Max feels great too with a full fresh water tank, and empty toilet tank!

Sunday, February 13, 2022

It was another beautiful day!

We hopped back on the bikes Saturday morning, and Martin came along with us.

This time, we headed north up along the bay to an area where they have built a huge five star resort complex. There's still a lot of construction going on in the area, and there are rumors of a cruise ship port that is going to be built up there as well.

It's days like this that we're so glad we have the bikes with us

I am reminded why we liked Fethiye. And I don't blame the 10,000 or so British expats for living here. It's a really nice city.

Yesterday, we got the bikes off and went for a ride. We knew that there is a 6 km cycle path that runs the length of the coastline here at Fethiye. It is lined with park space, and a running/walking track, and cafes. It's really pretty, especially on a beautiful blue sky day.

Friday, February 11, 2022

Made it to Fethiye

Woke up to a gorgeous blue sky and sunshine and the forecast says it's going to be the same thing for the next week or more. Finally. It seems like ever since we left Germany at the beginning of October we've been constantly searching for nice weather.

It's still not tropical by any means, but with highs of 17C to 19C over the next week, it's not bad when the sun is beating down on you.

Thursday, February 10, 2022

One of the best things about living on the road

Tuesday was quite the change from the beautiful day we had on Monday. Tuesday was a stormy day. Overcast, showers, and a really strong wind. We just stayed put in the parking lot of the municipal beach at Sarıgerme.

Fortunately, it was only a one day event and we were back to sunshine and blue skies on Wednesday.

Wednesday, February 9, 2022

How did it all begin?

Yesterday, we heard from Beth, a long time reader who says she never comments. But she sent us a very nice email instead. She had some questions about our history and how we got into this abnormal lifestyle and how we can afford to travel full time. She apologized for being nosy, but we don't mind telling the story! I did write about it once about ten years ago, but there are more details I should have included. And of course we've got a lot of readers who would have never read that particular post from so long ago.

So here is the whole story...

Tuesday, February 8, 2022

Finally got out for a bike ride!

I had a great birthday, thank you all for the birthday love!

This area is really fantastic for bike riding. And yesterday was perfect weather for doing exactly that! So I got the bikes off, and we went for a bike ride. I had a route planned that led to a cave, but I wasn't exactly sure what we would find there.

Monday, February 7, 2022

Today is a special day

Late Sunday morning, we drove from Marmaris to Sarıgerme Beach. About 100 kms (60 miles). Not a very exciting drive, mostly on a four lane highway. But the road was in great condition. Max really enjoyed it!

We arrived at a large paved beach parking lot. It was about 1/3 full, and we parked at the back away from everybody else. But by mid afternoon, the lot was packed and Max was no longer on his own!

Sunday, February 6, 2022

A question for the boaters out there...

Woke up to another beautiful day. This is the kind of weather we came here for!

In the morning, we hiked up to the antenna towers on the hill in behind where we are parked. We figured it would give us a great view of Marmaris, and it did...

Saturday, February 5, 2022

A beautiful day in Marmaris, Turkiye

We woke up to blue sky and sunshine, and it stayed with us all day. Even better, it looks like it's going to be a beautiful weekend as well, and right through into Monday.

We drove into Marmaris for a few reasons. We needed to do laundry, and there is one here that gets great reviews, and it has a big grocery store that is likely to have our gluten free bread. Also, because we had been here in November of 2020,  we knew that it has a nice waterfront walkway that goes for 5 kms (3 miles) in each direction. Great for people watching, and enjoying the nice weather.

Friday, February 4, 2022

Lots of water!

Wednesday night we had a lot of rain, together with a lot of thunder and lightning. We even had some hail. Surprisingly, we felt like we slept okay! Good thing we were parked on high ground though, as you'll see in the photos.

The weather turned out worse than forecast and we ended up sitting right where we were until just before the noon hour. Katja and Yves had taken off a little earlier than us, but not by a whole lot. They were taking a different route, but we will see them again down the road at some point.

Thursday, February 3, 2022

We might do one of the world's great train rides

We didn't do very much yesterday because the weather wasn't the best. We did do a short drive just for a change of scenery though. We ended up parked at a playground/park just outside the village of Kargicak. They even have a couple of electric outlets, and it's free. So, a good spot to spend the night when the solar panels aren't getting much charge during the day.

I wasn't going to tell you about our plan just yet, because it might not actually happen. But we don't have much else to talk about today, so here it is...
