One of the end panels is covered with a sort of a mactac woodgrain and it was already partially peeling, so I peeled off the loose stuff and saw this...
Yikes!
It was tiny... only about 3/4" long.
I wasn't even sure if it was alive, or if it was just a dried up carcass. But I went upstairs to get Ruth so she could see it too. Came back down and it was in the same place. We got distracted for maybe ten seconds and the next time we looked it was gone! I poked around a little, and saw it underneath another brace. I grabbed the phone to take another photo... and in the time that took, it disappeared again!
I ended up having to remove a plastic vent and found it in there. I didn't give it another chance to escape. No, it did not survive!
We were thinking about painting it.
But I've seen various photos of other where they've painted the cabinets and I don't think I like them. And a couple of comments where the people have painted them and later regretted it.
The only problem is that I need to replace the countertop. It's got that cheap melamine particleboard, and I want to make one out of solid wood. A wood countertop might not look so good along with a wood cabinet underneath. So we're not sure.
The underside of the countertop is rotten where the sink and faucet mount to it.
Today I need to go buy the wood for the floor.
Oh, while we were in Ecuador, we went to a "town hall" lunch put on by expats Warren and Julie. They have a popular youtube channel and they filmed the discussion afterwards that we took part in.

And in Canada...

It is called a vinegaroon, a harmless arthropod that actually eats small critters that lives in your van, probably protecting you from real scorpions and spiders.
ReplyDeleteNo, this was definitely a scorpion. If you notice in the picture that Kevin took, the tail has a segmented curved stinger, whereas a vinegaroon only has a whip0like tail!
DeleteWe made it through our entire time in Mexico without ever seeing a scorpion until the day we were moving back to the US. Amazing! We had lots of friends who had been stung, and it doesn't sound fun at all.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would paint the cabinet. I can't recall what other colors you have inside Igor, but a dark green or blue would look striking with a wood countertop. That oak is very dated and doesn't look to be in good condition. Of course do what you prefer....
You were lucky then to only have seen the one but it is sort of funny that you saw it on your last day in Mexico. I think that we have seen at least five that I can remember and two of them were in our motorhome, Sherman! Some stings are worse than others apparently. our friend Maricurz said that she got stung by one on her foot and really didn't have much of a reaction but Chago's dughter got stung on the face at night and her face all swelled up. Hopefully we will never have to find out what that is like!
DeleteIgor is mostly wood with off white and blue accents. We are actually thinking of painting the cabinets an off white and then just sanding down and vanishing the oak doors and drawers of the cabinet. We want to brighten it up inside a little, we find it a bit dark inside of Igor especially when the main doors are shut.
I like your idea of brightening the interior up, Ruth. The off-white paint sounds like a good plan!
DeleteThank you. We will start off with just this cabinet and if we like the way it turns out we will work on the other cabinets after that but it will mean painting them while they are inside of Igor.
