Igor was up for the challenge!

We managed to get on the road by 9:20am... not bad, considering our planned 9:00am departure time.

We had to go through Valle de Bravo, so we made a stop for a few groceries and an ATM before carrying on southeast.

As I mentioned yesterday, we had made an attempt to do this route with our motorhome Sherman 15 years ago, but only had a paper map and ended up re-routing ourselves through the city of Toluca. However this time, Igor was up for the challenge!

This was the steep hill that had turned Sherman around.

And it turns out that the first part was very steep. But after you go around a corner it kind of smooths out, and now that we've done it in Igor, I think Sherman probably could have done it as well. Igor does better than Sherman on steep parts overall. He has lots of power.

We did go through some old villages with narrow streets.

Beautiful scenery.

Screenshot of our twisty windy roads!

We were just south of the Toluca Volcano, but it was up in the clouds. Some of our roads were getting up there as well. I checked the altitude at one point and we were at 9,200'.

And lots of farming.

Overall, the roads were in good shape.
We only had this short 1km section under repair.

We ended up following several different slow moving dump trucks.

And a truckload of tomatoes as well!

Another narrow street.
Good thing there was only a motorcycle coming the other way.

Our destination!
Grutas de la Estrella (Star Caves).

We arrived at the caves at about 3:10pm. So, almost six hours from the time we left our house. But, we did do a grocery stop, and we stopped for an hour for lunch. We did 133 kms (82 miles). Most of the time we were doing between 40 km/h to 60 km/h (25 mph to 35 mph). But, we enjoyed the drive.

Yesterday's drive.

The security guard wouldn't let us overnight in the parking lot of the caves, but he directed us to his brother who was working as maintenance guy at a restaurant across the road that's only open on weekends. The guy was really friendly and set us up with a gated parking spot for the night for 150 pesos ($11.50 CAD, $8.40 USD).

We had a friend!

And a nice sunset.

Great start to the trip! This morning, we are heading in to see the caves as soon as they open at 10:00am, then heading through Cuernavaca to Tepoztlan.
