Our first flight takes off May 17th... a direct flight from Mexico City to Madrid, Spain.
I booked this flight back in January with Iberia Airlines, then a week ago they dropped the price of the extra legroom seats so I added them. Considering the extra legroom seats, this was actually quite a good deal for a 10.5 hour flight.
Mexico City to Madrid $564 CAD ($411 USD) + $109.50 ($80 USD) = $673.50 CAD ($491 USD) per person.
Cost per mile: 12.7 cents CAD, (9 cents USD)
Iberia is the national airline of Spain.
Next we fly with AJet from Madrid, Spain to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan with a connection in Ankara, Turkiye. AJet is the low cost subsidiary of Turkish Airlines.
Madrid to Kyrgyzstan $444.50 CAD ($324 USD) per person.
Cost per mile: 12.7 cents CAD, (9.4 cents USD).
AJet is the low cost subsidiary of Turkish Airlines.
Then we fly from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to Chengdu, China. We're flying on Loong Airlines, a Chinese low cost airline.
Bishkek to Chengdu $309.40 CAD, ($225 USD) per person.
Cost per mile: 16.5 cents CAD, (12.2 cents USD).
Loong Airlines
Our flight from China to Japan isn't booked yet. I'm actually waiting to see if prices drop a little. So because it's not booked yet, I'm not even positive what the routing will be, but it will likely be Beijing to Tokyo. I'll use the current pricing in case things don't drop.
Beijing to Tokyo $285 CAD, ($208 USD) per person.
Cost per mile: 21.8 cents CAD, (16.1 cents USD).
Next up is Tokyo, Japan to Vancouver, Canada. I booked with Zipair, a discount carrier based in Japan. This is one of those bare bones flights where you get nothing included. I had to pay extra for our carry on bags, and I splurged on extra legroom because it's a long flight. It was actually a reasonable splurge, and even with the extra legroom it was still cheaper than the base fares of the competition.
Tokyo to Vancouver $586.50 CAD ($427 USD) + $72 CAD, ($52.50 USD) = $658.50 CAD, $479.50 USD) per person.
Cost per mile: 14 cents CAD, (10.4 cents USD).
Zipair is definitely cheaper than the competition!
Our last leg is from Vancouver, Canada to Mexico City. with Aeromexico. I just happened to get a great price on this flight! And Aeromexico is a good airline.
Vancouver to Mexico City $295 CAD, ($218 USD) per person.
Cost per mile: 12 cents CAD, (8.9 cents USD).
Aeromexico is a good airline.
So, the total cost of our around the world flights?
$2,666 CAD ($1,940 USD) per person.
At an average cost of 13.6 cents CAD (10.1 cents USD) per mile.
I think we did really well. The standard for a "great deal" is to be able to fly for less than 10 cents a mile USD. So when you consider all of those flights lumped together come to 10.1 cents USD per mile, that puts us solidly in the "good deal" range, especially for a multi continent trip and one that includes a couple of extra legroom bookings.
And of course it could get slightly cheaper yet if I'm able to reduce the cost of that China to Japan leg that isn't booked yet.

Great deal on this Apple Watch Ultra 2.
And in Canada...
