Our home Wifi in Mexico

We hopped on the ATV and did a trip into town yesterday. Had some running around to do... go to the bank, do some shopping, etc.

And, we signed up for home internet WiFi.

This whole internet access thing is getting pretty expensive for us! But we love our Starlink, and it will remain with Igor when we take off further south. So we need something here at the house, especially when we have visitors who are here when we aren't. One of the local installers had a special on for home internet, so we decided to go for it now rather than wait until we leave with Igor in February. That way we lock in the lower price for the long term.

It costs 390 pesos ($29.80 CAD, $21.40 USD) a month. And it goes down to 370 a month after the first six months. And, it includes a phone number and unlimited calling to Canada, USA, and Mexico.

Unfortunately, our Starlink is quite a bit more expensive. They raised the rates for roaming here in Mexico to 2,000 pesos ($153 CAD, $110 USD) a month, but we love being able to get online wherever we are, so it's a splurge for us. Besides, how else would we be able to give you daily updates when we're on the road!?

They put up the big Christmas tree in town.

We were trying to figure out what to do with the lightning here in the house. There are only very basic ceiling fixtures like the type you might find in a garage or workshop or basement. They're not very attractive. I found some really nice LED fixtures that are reasonable priced... and I ordered 13 of them to replace all the ones in the house!

They were 120 pesos ($9 CAD, $6.50 USD) each, so it adds up when you order 13 of them, but it will look so much nicer and more modern. It will take some time to get them all changed!

  1. We also love having Starlink. Here in the US, we have a option where we get 50gig a month for $50, when we are not travelling we change it to the standby plan which lowers the monthly price to $5. On the standby plan it is usable but quite slow. For us 50 gigs has been plenty when travelling, of course if we were streaming video it would quickly run out. At home we use an unlimited cable service.

    1. We had our Starlink on standby the whole summer that we were away from Igor and when we came back we switched it to household which is lower than roaming but we changed it back to roaming when we were out exploring in Igor this past month and we can't change it back to household until Dec. 17th becuse you can only change it once per billing cycle and for us that won't work this month because we will be going out in Igor again just before Christmas until around the middle of January.

Once we actually start heading south in Igor and leave him parked up somewhere for the summer again, we will then put the Starlink on standby once again.

With the internet at the house we can also pause it when we aren't here which will be nice.

  2. Wow, I want to see a photo of the light fixtures you ordered! I can't imagine anything being that inexpensive these days!

Your home internet is very reasonable. We pay $50 (plus tax) monthly for T-Mobile home internet (cellular) here in the US. Living in a rural area, it's our best option.

    1. I am sure that Kevin will put up pictures of what we have now and then another one of the new lights. They aren't anything fancy but they will look much better than what we have now and the rooms will be much brighter too.

The home internet here is definitely very reasonable but it is also helpful that we are in an area where we can get fiber internet. The price you are paying for home cellular internet is way better that what it would be in Canada and even then they would have to be in an area that could even get cellular internet. We have heard that a lot of people in rural Canada are now getting Starlink because that is their best/only option for internet.

    2. Most in our county have a new fiber option for internet, but they left out our road. Starlink is another option, but won't work with our tall trees. So we are very thankful for cellular!

    3. That comment above was me, if it isn't obvious. When I post from my phone (rather than my laptop), it shows up as Anonymous!

    4. Lol, I knew it was you!

Starlink has tweaked their system and now it work more efficiently with obstacles, just not sure how much of the sky you would get but it sounds like the cellular works for you and it's at a decent price so why change?!
