We kind of had a loose budget of between $5,000 to $10,000 CAD ($3,700 USD to $7,400 USD) to get the whole thing finished. I based this on the experience of friends of ours who did a similar thing with a two bedroom apartment they rented in Mexico several years ago.
They rented a two bedroom apartment in rural Mexico that was totally unfurnished. So they had to start from scratch, and at the time they spent about $10,000 CAD. But our place was already partly furnished, plus we are a little more price sensitive than most and we don't mind shopping around.
The more expensive items were two 43" televisions, a washing machine, the downstairs bed (mattress and frame), the kitchen countertop and sink cabinet, and the two wardrobe closets. But there was also the other miscellaneous furniture... bedside tables, coffee tables, and a kitchen island cabinet.
But the small stuff really adds up too. Mostly all the kitchen appliances and utensils that you need for a well equipped kitchen. We've stayed in a lot of Airbnb's that advertise a "well equipped kitchen"... but that obviously means different things to different people!
The downstairs bedroom is totally finished
The only thing remaining is a couple more pictures for the walls, but that can wait until we get back at the end of January.
The downstairs bathroom.
And then there's everything else... towels, light fixtures, wall art, cushions and pillows, bedside table lamps, etc, etc.
In total, we spent $6,200 CAD (currently $4,540 USD). There are still a few minor items, and as I said earlier, we want to get some more wall art.
I'll do up a separate post this weekend advertising it for rent. We will rent out the downstairs bedroom with shared access to the kitchen and patio for when we are here ourselves, and the whole place is available for rent when we're not here. We haven't settled on prices yet, but be aware we're not doing this to make money... just to recoup costs when we're not here. So you might be amazed at how cheap it is. So if you want an inexpensive and non touristy holiday in the real Mexico, you can fly in to Mexico City, take a two hour bus ride, and you're here!
Temperatures in this area are not tropical, but in our mind perfect... about 24C (75F) during the day, and 10C (50F) at night. No artificial heating or cooling necessary.
It's available right now... until January 27th. And from March 1st onward.
View from our patio.
