They were just tiny ants, and they didn't bite... but they were annoying and of course they had to go.
So we bought some spray which did a great job of killing off the ones that we could see. But they obviously had nests somewhere because they kept reappearing. When we took Igor on the three week trip to Hidalgo, we would go a few days without seeing any... then they would reappear again.
We just couldn't seem to get rid of them!
So when we got back here, I did some research into the best product and method. What you need is a bait product that is very attractive to the ants. And there is only one product that gets really great reviews...
And, it was available on Amazon Mexico. The only problem was the price. The only one available was the four pack, and we really only needed the one pack. The four pack cost 1,045 pesos ($80 CAD, $58 USD). Yikes!
We actually had a thunderstorm move in yesterday evening!
It rained fairly hard for about 45 minutes.
But we didn't see what choice we had. We had tried everything else, and from reading the reviews this product definitely does what it was supposed to do. So I ordered it and it arrived the week my sister was here. I used less than one tube and put the drops of gel in about ten places around the motorhome. Within 15 minutes the ants came out of the woodwork (almost literally!) and hundreds of them began snacking on the gel. They really like that stuff!
So what happens is that the ants feed by regurgitation. So they eat the gel, which contains a slow acting poison, and they return to the nest where they feed the larvae and the queen.
The instructions said that you would actually see increased ant activity for 24 hours after placing the drops. And that's exactly what happened! You would almost think the product makes things worse, and for that 24 hour period it actually does. But then within another 24 hours later... they are all gone, with tiny ant carcasses left all over. So yesterday, we removed everything from the motorhome, and gave it a good thorough vacuum. I didn't see a single live ant.
It appears that we finally won!
Because I used less than one tube, we have a good supply ready in case we ever have an ant problem again, and we have encountered this several times in Mexico so we really don't mind having leftovers for the next time.
Merry Christmas to all of our readers! We're just having a quiet day here getting Igor ready to go to Jalisco on Monday. Oh, and we've got a Spanish lesson this afternoon.

We had an ant problem in San Francisco one year and ended up using a household "bomb" that wiped them out as well, the only problem is you have to stay out of the rig for eight to twelve hours which we did. But it was worth it!
