A traditional Mexican Christmas posada

Our friend Chago is involved with the local church, and of course 99% of Mexicans are Catholic, so the Christmas season is big thing. He told us about a local Christmas posada taking place in our nearby village of San Gaspar, and invited us to join in.

It's a very popular thing where people walk down the street, with children singing songs and stopping at neighbors along the way to say hello. A very community themed event. Followed by a church service and punch and pinatas afterwards.

And, we want to be part of the community, so we went to take part.

The neighbors who want visitors decorate the entrance to their homes, and light fires to keep visitors warm.

There were a lot of people!

We joined the line.

The village of San Gaspar is well decorated.

We got to the church, and it was packed! We think they need a bigger church... there were a lot of people left outside. We managed to get a seat right at the back.

We kind of stand out like a sore thumb... there are no other gringos in the area, and while the adults definitely notice us (they are very welcoming!), a few of the children shyly stare and smile because it's just not something they see on a regular basis, especially at a local event. I'm also probably the tallest person there, and our light colored hair makes us very different to the kids. Everyone has jet black hair, and most of the older ladies color theirs.

Inside the packed and well decorated Catholic church.

So we sat through the prayers that lasted maybe 20 minutes. Then everyone slowly filed out the rear door, and were presented with gift bags of candies, cookies, and nuts called "colaciónes".

Our colaciónes.

Then everyone heads across the street where many neighbors share hot fruit punch, often along with a shot of tequila or vodka!

Then it's the pinatas for the kids...

All in all, a fun evening and we're happy to take part in a local custom shared with a welcoming community.
