Boondocking up in the mountains of Michoacan

A bit of a late start yesterday morning. It just seems like there is more to do than we originally think there is! Anyhow, not a big deal because we're not on any kind of time schedule for the next couple of weeks.

And there are a lot of possible overnight areas along our route, so we figured that if we didn't get as far as we wanted, it really doesn't matter.

Even then, we still managed to do 175 kms (108 miles), although it took almost four hours to do it!

A lot of our drive was through built up areas.

And we had a little road construction to deal with.

We made a decision to head up into the mountains east of Morelia. This is the old highway 15, one of the original roads in Mexico that was built to connect Mexico City to Guadalajara. It was a dirt road in the1930's but was paved by 1952. Nowadays it's just a rural two lane road with a lot of curves and only local and logging traffic use it.

We had taken this road 15 years ago in our motorhome Sherman and we had boondocked on a microwave tower road. We decided to try to find the same spot and hike up to the tower again.

Beautiful views through the mountains.

The road was now gated, but not locked and there was enough room out front where we would be fine to park for the night. You could tell the road hadn't been used for quite a while.

Igor, parked for the night at GPS 19.671954, -100.82271

We left Igor alone and set off for a hike up to the antenna tower. Turns out that it's 8 kms (5 miles) return, so it's a decent hike. And, we're at 9,600' altitude.

Lots of pretty flowers along the way.

Ruth on the trail.

Made it to the top.

It was tough to get a view from the top... too much vegetation!

I even made an attempt to climb the old fire tower, but chickened out half way up!

Slept great... quiet and dark as can be!

Heading into the big city of Morelia this morning to go to a Walmart. We have to drive right by it anyhow, so might as well stop in and pick up a few things.

Yesterday's drive 175 kms (108 miles).

  1. I visited Morelia & Patzcuaro many times over the years. One of my favorite parts of Mexico.
