Mexican Fireworks! And our furniture arrived!

But before we get to the fireworks, we have some good news...

Almost all of our furniture arrived yesterday! They said they would deliver it around 10:00am. It was almost 10:45am when they showed up... but they only had one piece with them!

They delivered the kitchen sink cabinet first because it required some installation. Then while the one guy was installing that, the other two went to get the rest of the stuff.

Before.

After!

I'm not going to show you photos of the other stuff yet. Need to wait until our wall pictures arrive next week so we can show you the rooms all finished.

Anyhow, they ended up delivering everything except for the kitchen island. It's not ready yet. And without us asking, they have given us a 1,000 peso ($76 CAD, $55 USD) discount due to the delay.

So, then we spent the rest of the day getting the rooms organized and finally having somewhere to store our things rather than just lying around on various parts of the floor!

There was a weird cloud that moved in on the other side of the lake.

Almost looked like an explosion, but it wasn't.

Yesterday was Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Day) here in Mexico. This is a Catholic holiday that honors the Virgin Mary, Mexico's patron saint, and is a significant day for Mexican culture and faith. The celebration commemorates the Virgin Mary's appearance to Juan Diego, an indigenous peasant, in 1531.

The local celebration in our nearby town is a bit of a fiesta with a lot of fireworks and of course music. We went to the one last year, but hadn't dressed warmly enough and ended up leaving before the grand finale. This year, it's a little warmer out, plus we arrived later... in fact, just in time!

Fiesta at San Gaspar.

This is the "castillo" (castle).

We have been to a few Mexican fiestas where they do the castillo. It's a tower of fireworks that tells a story, spinning and glowing it's way through the celebration. It's really something to see, and would probably be considered dangerous in many parts of the world! Every one is built differently and there's a lot of work that goes into it.

Here it goes!

The entire event takes about 15 minutes. This one was a little slow because they didn't have it so that one burn leads to the next. they actually had a guy lighting things up between sections.

I videotaped the whole thing for you. It's a bit long, but there are parts you don't want to miss. Like when a local dog jumps up to try to bite the fire!

Lots of fun, and definitely a different cultural experience that not many visitors get to experience!

More fireworks to end things off.

Busy day today as we have a lot to do before heading to Mexico City tomorrow morning to meet up with my sister and nephew!

And in Canada...

  1. Your kitchen cabinet is beautiful and gives you so much storage. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the furniture.
The fireworks display was amazing but that was scary when the dog was jumping toward it.
Always some excitement in Mexico !
    Thanks for taking us along.
