Mexican Fireworks! And our furniture arrived!

But before we get to the fireworks, we have some good news...

Almost all of our furniture arrived yesterday! They said they would deliver it around 10:00am. It was almost 10:45am when they showed up... but they only had one piece with them!

They delivered the kitchen sink cabinet first because it required some installation. Then while the one guy was installing that, the other two went to get the rest of the stuff.

Before.

After!

I'm not going to show you photos of the other stuff yet. Need to wait until our wall pictures arrive next week so we can show you the rooms all finished.

Anyhow, they ended up delivering everything except for the kitchen island. It's not ready yet. And without us asking, they have given us a 1,000 peso ($76 CAD, $55 USD) discount due to the delay.

So, then we spent the rest of the day getting the rooms organized and finally having somewhere to store our things rather than just lying around on various parts of the floor!

There was a weird cloud that moved in on the other side of the lake.

Almost looked like an explosion, but it wasn't.

Yesterday was Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Day) here in Mexico. This is a Catholic holiday that honors the Virgin Mary, Mexico's patron saint, and is a significant day for Mexican culture and faith. The celebration commemorates the Virgin Mary's appearance to Juan Diego, an indigenous peasant, in 1531.

The local celebration in our nearby town is a bit of a fiesta with a lot of fireworks and of course music. We went to the one last year, but hadn't dressed warmly enough and ended up leaving before the grand finale. This year, it's a little warmer out, plus we arrived later... in fact, just in time!

Fiesta at San Gaspar.

This is the "castillo" (castle).

We have been to a few Mexican fiestas where they do the castillo. It's a tower of fireworks that tells a story, spinning and glowing it's way through the celebration. It's really something to see, and would probably be considered dangerous in many parts of the world! Every one is built differently and there's a lot of work that goes into it.

Here it goes!

The entire event takes about 15 minutes. This one was a little slow because they didn't have it so that one burn leads to the next. they actually had a guy lighting things up between sections.

I videotaped the whole thing for you. It's a bit long, but there are parts you don't want to miss. Like when a local dog jumps up to try to bite the fire!

Lots of fun, and definitely a different cultural experience that not many visitors get to experience!

More fireworks to end things off.

Busy day today as we have a lot to do before heading to Mexico City tomorrow morning to meet up with my sister and nephew!

And in Canada...

  1. Your kitchen cabinet is beautiful and gives you so much storage. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the furniture.
The fireworks display was amazing but that was scary when the dog was jumping toward it.
Always some excitement in Mexico !
    Thanks for taking us along.

    1. We are really happy with our kitchen cabinet and yes, it gives me so much more storage and now I have support for the kitchen sink. It will be evebn nicer once the kitchen island arrives. Overall we are very happy with the furniture, especially for the price we paid for homemade furniture. The casita is now starting to look like a "home:!

We love these kinds of firework displays, they are so different from the ones we see in Canada and the US. We have seen the dogs jumping at the fireworks last year and they seem to know what they are doing and that they never seem to get hurt. Usually dogs are frightened of the noise but I guess the Mexican dogs are used to it!

  2. Kitchen cabinets are a really nice addition and look great. Fireworks were impressive AND it took a lot of effort and expertise to put it all together. And as you suggested, it was probably a bit dangerous to the onlookers with all the sparks flying! Loved watching your video, and thank you for posting!

    1. The cabinet is definitely a great addition and much needed, I am already so much happier with the kitchen. We still have a few more things to do in there but it is really taking shape and once the kitchen island arrives it will be even better.

We have watched the people that put these castillos together and yes, it takes a lot of time and effort and just setting it up looks dangerous, there doesn't seem to be any safety equipment used either. They do have tape put up around a certain area around the castillo so that nobody gets too close but there is not way it would pass any safety rules in Canada or the US. It sure is an amazing thing to see when they light it up though!

    1. We are so happy with the kitchen cabinet, it is just what we needed in the kitchen and yes, I am so pleased to have more counter space and actual drawers and cupboards to store all the kitchen stuff. We are looking forward to getting the kitchen island next week. I think you are going to like the rest of the furniture once we get the rooms all set up!
