The price of water

Most people know that you don't drink the tap water here in Mexico. Even the locals buy bottled water. Normally, you buy a 20 liter (5.3 gallons) jug full of purified water. The jug is called a garrafon.

Once you have made the initial purchase and have drank all the water, you can exchange your empty garrafon for a full one.

But this year, we noticed that the price to exchange has really gone up. It's now 60 pesos ($4.60 CAD, $3.35 USD). Plus of course we have to use the ATV to go do the exchange.

There is a self serve refill place at the gas station in nearby El Arco. It's the best deal, at only 15 pesos ($1.15 CAD, $0.85 USD) but of course we still need to use the ATV to go into town to get it. We don't mind the price... but it's the aggravation of going to get the refill done once or twice a week.

So we decided to look for another option.

The 10 liter Ecofilter Twist.

We ordered one from Amazon Mexico and it arrived yesterday. It has a ceramic gravity fed filter and you just pour tap water in the top, and it drips through the filter to become purified water out the bottom. It takes about an hour and a half to get 1.5 liters of purified water.

You pour the water in here.

It wasn't super cheap though, at 1,962 pesos ($150 CAD, $109 USD) so it will take a while to pay for itself. But the convenience of not having to run out to refill the garrafon so often will be worth it.

Interestingly, it's made in Guatemala and is not available in Canada or the U.S..

In other news, our flooring arrived as part of our Amazon delivery yesterday. Unfortunately it's not as good quality as the one I had installed in our old motorhome Sherman many years ago, but it will have to do.

I got this much done before calling it a day.

And, we spoke to a young couple yesterday who are going to be spending the month of February 2027 here at our house. The means we now have February, March, and April booked for next year. Still looking for prospective tenants for November, December and January.

  1. The water purifier will be a relief to your renters and a break on your time so it'll probably pay off faster than you think.

    1. We certainly think that it will be so much better for them and for us as well. Just the convenience of not having to go out to get the water is worth it.

  2. We have been using the countertop AquaTru Classic reverse osmosis water purifier in our home for a number of years with good results. We use the smaller AquaTru Carafe purifier in our motorhome.

    1. That sounds like a nice set up but it is also more expensive and it uses electricity whereas this one does not have to rely on electricity which is always a money saver here in Mexico.. We have had the Lifesaver Cube in Igor for the last two years and we love it. It takes up very little space and one again it doesn't require electricity and the filter is good for 5,000 liters (1,320 gallons) so it will last us for years before we have to change it. We are really happy with it.

  3. Looking into water filtration, watched a video about making your own. It used the clay pot strategy, but specified a clay pot made in Italy as they had no impurities in the clay. I finally ordered some Berkfeld Filters made in the UK for my Berkey system. They are not the same as the ones sold in the US. (shipped from Georgia) Hope they work better and don't leave spots in the empty pan after heating. Also removes the flouride without having the plastic flouride filters hanging in the purified water.

    1. Yes, we have also seen ones that you can make one yourself but for the price we think this is a good system. We are drinking our tea and coffee from the water this morning and it tastes great. No chlorine taste or any other chemical or plastic taste to it.

We have seen the Berkey system and they look great but also double the price that we paid. For us, I think that we made the right choice.

    2. I think so too. Wish it was sold here or I would've bought that instead.
