On the way back, the sidewalk is very uneven and Ruth was wearing shoes with very little traction. There was one sloping area and it was a bit sandy and that's where Ruth slipped and fell.
She landed on her left arm and hand. She was in pain, but nothing looked out of place, and she got up and we carried on back to the house.
But by Friday morning, she was in a lot of pain. The hand was a bit swollen, but not that bad. We decided she should get it looked at just in case there was a break somewhere.
But, where to go? There is a small hospital in Valle de Bravo, and there are also a lot of small clinics. There is also one private doctor who specializes in fractures and trauma. And there is a Red Cross clinic as well.
We went and explained the problem to our friend Chago. He volunteered to drive us into town and of course he knew the procedure.
For something like this, the doctor isn't the first stop. The doctor would take a look and tell you it needs x-rays. So instead of wasting time at the doctor, you go directly to a private x-ray clinic. Which is what we did. There was no lineup, and literally within three minutes, Ruth was in getting her x-rays done.
Big fancy modern high tech x-ray machine.
The entire apparatus swivels automatically to do the shoulder x-ray.
Five minutes later, we were handed the hard copy x-rays as well as having already received electronic copies on my phone.
Ruth's wrist!
The x-rays cost 200 pesos each... so the bill was 600 pesos ($46 CAD, $33.50 USD) for the 3 x-rays.
Next stop was to find a doctor. The first guy we went to was the trauma specialist. But he was busy and we didn't have an appointment. The receptionist said we could wait and he might be able to take a look within an hour, but the cost would be 1,200 pesos instead of the normal 800 pesos with an appointment.
We decided to go to the Red Cross. There, there was no wait at all and we were seen within five minutes. A young female doctor who spoke a bit of English had a look at the x-rays and declared that there were no breaks. She had a look at the hand and shoulder and prescribed a pain killer and a topical anti-inflammatory gel. She then wrapped the wrist in a supporting bandage.
The total bill at the Red Cross was 250 pesos ($19 CAD, $14 USD).
Next stop was the pharmacy. The bill there was 247 pesos ($19 CAD, $14 USD).
So, the entire experience with x-rays, doctor visit, and treatment cost 1,097 pesos ($84 CAD, $61 USD).
Just to clarify before somebody asks... no, we don't have medical insurance, and simply pay out of pocket as necessary. In almost twenty years of travel, we have saved thousands by not paying insurance premiums. Yes, we understand the risks, but we also understand the math behind odds, probability, and statistics so we are comfortable with that.
Trying to take it with a smile.
She says it feels better this morning, although of course the pain killers have kicked in. Hopefully a quick recovery.

ReplyDeleteThank you very much, there is definitely improvement, especially this morning (Sunday) so I expect I should be more or less back to normal in a few more days.
DeleteGet well soon Ruth. $61 USD! That can cost several thousand $ here in So. California.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, very inexpensive and good care as well.
DeleteSending good wishes for a speedy recovery Ruth.
ReplyDeleteSue
Thank you very much, it is very much appreciated.
DeleteHoping you heal quickly. Take care
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, I am definitely feeling much better than those first two days.
DeletePraying for complete healing .
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, I am already feeling better, hopefully in a few more days I will be more or less back to normal.
DeleteGet well soon Ruth!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
DeleteI'm with you. That's also my kind of healthcare.
ReplyDeleteFeel better every day, Ruth ~ you've got places to go!
We are glad that we aren't the only ones that think this way,
DeleteI am already feeling better, hopefully I will be back to normal before we head out for our month in Veracruz.
Feel better soon! Let Kevin do all the chores and cooking!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am surprised what I can do with one hand and a little bit of use of the other. I was able to do the cooking but anything that uses any kind of strength like opening a jar, I needed help with, things just take me longer to do. I did totally rest in the afternoon though!
DeleteSounds like a green stick fracture, I had that years ago and it healed on it's own with restricted movement. Get better soon Ruth!
ReplyDeleteNope, no fracture, not even a crack. The x-rays came back clean and the doctor followed the mucles down the arm and I would say that her diagnosis of muscle inflammation is a correct one. Already my hand/wrist is feeling much better with a lot less pain (I was able to go all day yesterday without any pain killers) and I am able to use my hand a lot more now.
DeleteI left a comment from my phone yesterday, but it must have gotten lost in the ether. Glad there weren't any broken bones and glad you are right-handed (I believe), Ruth! The low cost for all that care is just amazing. I pay far more than that for a month of health insurance!
ReplyDeleteYou had a comment onour Facebook post so maybe you just got mixed up with where you placed the comment.
DeleteWe are also glad that nothing was broken and I am doing much better now, thank you. I am right-handed so I am glad that this happened to the left hand rather than the right. We were both really pleased with the service I recieved and we were both really surprised at how high tech the x-ray machine was and that it only cost us 200 pesos ($13 USD) for each x-ray and that we didn't have to wait.
You're exactly right, Ruth! I rarely post on Facebook but happened to see the blog post there first and wanted to make sure to let you know I was thinking of you. Then I forgot and thought I posted here. D'oh! Glad you are doing better!
DeleteI thought maybe that is what happened and yes, I am doing much better thank you. I am now almost painfree and pretty much have full movement of my hand again. 😊
Deletesending energy and love to you Ruth..Be well .
ReplyDeleteThank you Barry! We think of you often and hope you are doing well.
DeleteAdmit it, you were on your Skateboard. Keep Smiling!
ReplyDeleteDamn, how did you find that out, lol?
DeleteSo glad Ruth is doing better! Ouchie ouchie!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen and yes, I am doing better.
