Always lots going on in Mexico City

Ruth and I took the bus from Valle de Bravo to Mexico City yesterday morning. It's a two hour direct bus ride and costs 310 pesos ($23.75 CAD, $$17.25 USD) per person each way.

We arrived at Ponitente Bus Terminal and walked to the new Observatorio Metro subway station. There, we bought a transit card for 15 pesos and filled it with another 10 pesos for the two of us to be able to do the 8 stop trip to the center. The Mexico City subway is super cheap.

We decided to walk the 2 kms from our exit stop to the Hotel MX Garibaldi where we were able to drop our bags.

Fancy fountain on our walk to the hotel.

We dropped our bags off and because my sister and her son don't arrive at the airport until 3:00pm, we decided to do the 5 km (3 mile) walk to Ikea.

There was a huge street market that went for blocks. It was packed with people!

We stopped at this street food stall for lunch.

We had tlacoyos!

Made it to the Ikea, and it was packed as well. It took us far longer to find the items we wanted than it should have, but Ikea is always a bit of a maze! We bought six dinner plates, six bowls, and six bread and butter plates for a total of 294 pesos ($22.50 CAD, $16.40 USD).

Then we took an Uber from the Ikea to Mexico City Airport terminal 2 to meet my sister Alison, and her son Marshal. Met up with them right on time, and we took another Uber from the airport back to our hotel.

Our room at the Hotel MX Garibaldi.

This is the 3rd different property we have stayed at with this Mexico City chain. The prices are reasonable and they do a really nice included breakfast. Our room cost 890 pesos ($68 CAD, $49 USD) per night.

Then we took them on the three hour tour version of central Mexico City. Marshal was flying back to Canada later that evening, so didn't have much time to see the sights.

Sunday late afternoon, the main pedestrian street was packed with people!

We typically take our visitors to the Cafe de Tacuba restaurant. It's a little bit touristy, but they have a varied menu and live entertainment.

Ussie with the mariachi guys.

The restaurant is decorated for Christmas with a giant pinata.

We went to the plaza and did some more exploring after dinner.

Mexico City Cathedral and the Christmas market in the central plaza.

There are parts of the Templo Mayor archeological site that are not closed off.

We could have gone up to this place to try some gourmet insects!
But we didn't!

Cars nicely decorated for Christmas.

We spent some time people watching in Almeda Central Park.
This is the oldest park in the Americas, established in 1592.

You will never starve in Mexico City!
There is food everywhere.

Back at the hotel.
My sister Alison, and her son Marshal.

We put Marshal into an Uber for his ride back to the airport. He's flying one of those ridiculous Mexico City to Calgary to Ottawa routes. Alison will stay with us until she returns to Calgary next Monday.

Today we are going to take the relatively new public cable car system in the southeast end of the city.

And in Canada...

  1. So much to look at from the human packed streets to the green cheetos. The old architecture and the last two old statues look like they are from a previous civilization. Very European looking. Thanks for showing us.
