Anyhow, one of our favorite campgrounds on the trip was in El Chico National Park.
This was the last time we were here... https://www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2020/03/one-of-prettiest-campsites-in-mexico.html
At the time, I had mentioned that we'd like to stay here for a week or more because there are so many trails and things to see... and we have finally returned!
We were aiming for a 9:00am start, but didn't actually get going until 9:30am. Not bad.
The road leading from the campsite at Jilotepec to the main road.
Scenery along the way.
So we took a secondary road that had a lot of topes (speed bumps). We know that it can be slow going in Mexico, so we just deal with it and enjoy the many things to see along the way.
Like this...
They were transporting some kind of massive oil infrastructure.
There were two pieces.
We've never seen a trailer with so many wheels!
We had to do 29 kms (20 miles) on the Arco Norte. This is the toll highway that runs around the top of Mexico City. We haven't been on the Arco Norte for quite a few years, but our past experiences haven't been great. There is always either road construction, or the road is in terrible shape. This time, that 29 kms was in terrible shape. Pot holes and bumpy. Really bad considering it's a toll highway.
More scenery.
Well stocked hardware store!
Big cross near Pachuca.
We stopped and topped up the gas tank.
We'll be using our gasoline furnace quite a lot up in the mountains. I expect it will go down to freezing at night. Because the furnace draws from the fuel tank, there is a built in fail safe to prevent you from running out of fuel and when it gets somewhere below half full the furnace won't operate. So better to start off with a full tank, although the furnace really doesn't use very much. Even on the highest setting the usage is only around a quarter of a liter per hour.
The road leading up to the park gives a good view of the city of Pachuca.
The road leading in is a little rough!
But it's totally worth it!
Our campsite at GPS 20.182545, -98.730849
We are at 9,700' (2,940 meters) altitude and there was frost on the ground when we woke up this morning. But the sun will quickly warm things up and we should have a sunny high around 20C (68F) today. Looking forward to getting out and doing some hiking!

The Jackery Explorer 1000 portable power station is at a record low price for Black Friday.
And in Canada...

That was my favorite campground on the entire trip. Garth
