We had to drive 164 kms (102 miles), but most of it was on secondary roads and it's probably a 4 hour drive. Lots of topes (speed bumps) and built up areas. The choice was to partially take the toll highway (one section of which we had no choice but to do), but it really wouldn't have saved that much time, and it would cost more.
Add in a stop for lunch, and a stop for groceries, and we knew it was going to take 6 hours!
Scenery along the way.
We didn't take many photos of the drive.
We did have to get on the Arco Norte toll highway for about 30 kms (18 miles).
The toll was 95 pesos ($7.25 CAD, $5.20 USD) for that section.
Ruth did take a couple of videos though. The first one is going through the large town of Progreso, Hidalgo. It's a busy spot and it's one of the few places that hasn't built a libramiento (bypass) around the town yet.
Scenery driving through town.
Just after that, we stopped at a Bodega Aurrera grocery store in the next town of Mixquiahuala. Now keep in mind that this is definitely not a tourist area, and not on any kind of a tourist route. We had a lot of people staring at Igor like they had never seen an RV before. Anyhow, we're at the cash register checking out, and the woman asked (in absolutely perfect English) "Do you speak English?"
Of course we do! It turns out that Evelyn grew up in southern California but moved to this area. She gave us her number in case we ever want to spend time here she will show us around. Really nice lady. We were tempted to find somewhere to stay, but there are no listings of campgrounds in the area, and we would have to drive to a couple of balnearios (recreational swimming areas) to see if we could find somewhere to camp. Plus, we had already made plans to come to where we are. But, we will certainly keep it in mind for next time.
We had already done the same route, but in reverse from the drive we did three weeks ago, so our next stop was at the La Burbuja Campground where Raul and his family were so welcoming the first time.
This time, Ruth took a video of the drive up to the campground...
When we got up there, we were surprised to find a camper already in the spot we wanted. But then we should have known it would be busier on the weekend. This was an older Mexican plated camper, and the couple are from Mexico City. They belong to a camper club there, and apparently five more rigs will be arriving today. There aren't a lot of level spots here, so it should be interesting. In fact one new one just pulled in as I'm writing this. We'll be sure to get some photos throughout today.
The rainy skies have passed and it's supposed to be a beautiful sunny weekend with highs around 21C (70F). Looking forward to getting some more hiking in.
