Never again!

As long as we own some kind of campervan, there are two things I'll never pay someone to do. The first is to wash it. I have never paid someone to wash my motorhome. If I'm still able to drive it, I'm still able to keep it clean myself!

And the second is an oil change...

Now, I admit that I have paid to have someone change the oil. Twice. But never again!

The first time was on our old motorhome Sherman. I had been changing the oil myself on a regular basis, but for whatever reason that I can't remember now, I paid to have it done at a Walmart somewhere in the southern U.S. back in 2011 or 2012.

Another sunset at Valle de Bravo.

The next time when I went to do the job myself again, I couldn't remove the oil filter. It was on so tight that I ended up cutting the filter off so that I could access the base and I had a friend weld studs to a socket that would fit on the base of the filter. So, it was either overtightened, or they forgot to put a few drops of oil on the gasket... or both! I swore at the time that I would never pay someone again to do such a simple job.

Until last year when Igor needed an oil change and the mechanic they use here at the marina just happened to be here and I figured I would contribute to the local economy. So he did the job, and that was fine.

The problem only occurs when the next guy does the job. So yesterday, I changed the oil again to get him ready for our trip on Monday. Once again, the filter was on too tight. Fortunately not as bad as Sherman's had been, but still more difficult than it should have been. Anyhow... never again. I'll stick to changing the oil myself.

Man, the oil has really gone up in price though. Just the oil and filter cost 1,008 pesos ($76.75 CAD, $54.50 USD). But, 10W30 isn't very common in Mexico and I knew it would be a little more expensive. Fortunately, a new Autozone store opened up here in Valle, and they had it in stock.

Ruth spent much of the day giving a deep clean to the interior. We had totally removed everything in the van, so that's the time to vacuum and wipe everything down. She even removed all the curtains and washed them.

Today, we'll start moving everything back in, and I'll start washing the exterior... it might be a two day job! But then we're ready head out Monday morning. Looking forward to being on the road again!

  1. Yup! I know what you mean! Had to chisel a too-tight filter off my beloved Monte Carlo in the 70s. Had to use non-hardening Permatex gasket maker on every oil change after that because of the gouges!

    1. What a pain. The Monte Carlo was a beautiful car! Never owned one myself, but I had a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix that was similar.
