For those of you who don't know, Sherman is the name of our motorhome.
Sherman has been parked here at Hacienda Contreras RV Park near Valle de Juarez, Jalisco, Mexico. He's been been parked here since April 1st of 2013, almost one full year without us!
He was sure happy to see us yesterday. And we were happy to see him!

What a day...but we made it!
Thrilled to be back at our motorhome Sherman and with our friends at Hacienda Contreras RV Park!
But what a long day it was to get here.
When we left you last, we were on our way to the Cancun airport. It was about 9:30pm and our flight departed at 1:40am. We gave ourselves lots of time because we were taking local transport and weren't sure how that was going to go.

Beach Palace Resort (day 3)
Best day yet, from a weather point of view. Perfect temperatures, hardly any wind, and mostly sunshine.
We didn't do very much though! I guess that's the idea, although they certainly do have activities should you wish to take part. Seems to me we took part in a lot of food and drink the last three days!

Beach Palace Resort (day 2)
The day started out okay, but around the noon hour the clouds moved in. And then the skies opened up and it poured with rain for a couple of hours here in Cancun. But we still had a good day!

Beach Palace Resort (day 1)
Shortly after 9:00am yesterday morning, we said good bye to our couchsurfing host Carmen and her dog Ghia. Thanks for having us Carmen, we enjoyed seeing you again!
We were headed to the luxury all inclusive Beach Palace Resort. All we had to do was to figure out how to get there!

Spring break? No thanks!
Yesterday morning we went for a walk on the beach. A long walk on the beach!
Where we have been staying is in the city of Cancun, not the hotel zone. So we're actually about 4 kms (2.4 miles) walking distance just to get to the beach.

Day trip to the island of Cozumel
Up bright and early yesterday morning at 5:30am in order to catch the 8:00am ferry to the island of Cozumel. We had to walk to the bus station, then take the bus to Playa del Carmen, then take the ferry to Cozumel.
It didn't go as smoothly as we planned!

Lost in Cancun
Yup. We got lost this morning.
Still can't quite figure out how we did it. But had we been on "The Amazing Race" television show, today would have been the day we would have been eliminated from the race!

Sometimes our life can be a little complicated...
Trying to figure out the best way to get to places and be where we want (or need) to be is pretty difficult sometimes. Different flight options and prices, what to do with the motorhome and the little blue car, and other "stuff" that we own, and then the variety of unknowns thrown into the mix.
Yesterday, another piece of the puzzle fit nicely into place...

Cheap Cape Town Car Rental
We had to do a shout out to the company who rented us our car in Cape Town. As you know, we tell it like it is and when we find a well run company who also gives us a deal, then we feel obliged to tell you about it!
We had been looking for cheap, basic transportation for our two month visit to South Africa and Lesotho. Here's what we found...

Happy to be back in Mexico!
Hard to believe that it's been almost a year since we left Mexico. In fact, it was April 6th of last year when we drove the little blue car across the border from Mexico to the United States. Our motorhome Sherman has been sitting patiently waiting for us all that time. And we are missing our motorhome lifestyle! But we don't get back to Sherman until the 19th, a week from today.
For the next week, we are in Cancun!

New York CityPASS
Busy day yesterday. And because we only had two and a half days in New York, we didn't want to waste any of it!
First thing, we went for a walk half way across the Williamsburg Bridge. We wanted to see if we could get a different view of midtown Manhattan, but it turns out that they've got screening mesh across most of it so that you can't throw things (or yourself!) onto the cars and subway trains that are also crossing the bridge.

New York City Food Tour!
Well, this was a fun and different way to spend a few hours yesterday.
We had been invited to take part in a walking tour of New York's Chinatown and Little Italy areas. But with an added twist. This tour included stopping at restaurants along the way and sampling some of their offerings!

Back in the Big Apple!
Seems we brought some South African weather back to New York City. Well, almost. Yesterday was probably the nicest day New York has seen since last December!
But what a long trip to get here. When you include the hour and a half stop in Dakar, Senegal, we were on the plane for eighteen and a half hours!

Travel day!
Actually writing this from the departure lounge at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Said goodbye this morning to our Cape Town couchsurfing host Mark. Thanks for having us Mark!
Then we drove our rental car over to Key Car Hire, filled it up with gas one last time, and owners Gary and Liesl personally drove us to the airport from there. So nice dealing with a small company where the owners are there to properly look after their customers.
Then, we had a two hour wait for our flight.

On top of Table Mountain
The city of Cape Town is dominated by the famous geological structure of Table Mountain. You don't really understand it until you see it, and it's almost always visible from some angle no matter where you are in the city.
And you can't help but look at it. Stuck in traffic? Stare at Table Mountain. Sitting on an outdoor patio? Odds are good that it faces Table Mountain. Very often, you will be able to watch the clouds falling over the edge of the mountain. They call that "the tablecloth".
But really, what you want to do is to be on top of the mountain. Fortunately, there are two ways to accomplish this!

Cape Town views
We drove back downtown yesterday. First goal was to find some gluten free bread. Second was to visit with a lady we had couchsurfed with back towards the beginning of January.
We knew where we wanted to go for the bread. The Wellness Warehouse on Kloof St.

Scenic drive around Cape Town
It's pretty easy to figure out why Cape Town is a popular place to live. There are mountains, and beaches, it has perfect weather, and there's a lot to do. There's always something going on.
There's a big bicycle race happening here this weekend and the route is very scenic. Yesterday, we took the car for a drive and followed much of the route that the cyclists will be doing.

Stanley's Light
One of the reasons that we came to the town of Ladismith was to do a hike that we had read about. And, there's a kind of an oddball story that goes along with this hike.
So we were up at 5:30am yesterday morning. We had read that it was a difficult climb up and so we wanted to do that part early before it got too hot out.

February Expenses
Another pricey month, mostly because of our visit to Lesotho (which was totally worth it!) and our overnight and accommodation costs. Probably the most we've ever spent on accommodation for the month!
We spent a total of $2,284 for the month. Here's how it all broke down...

Just an update
On Thursday morning, we drove from Oudtshoorn to Ladismith. Once again, we had the highway pretty much to ourselves. We had no idea where we would end up for the night. Sometimes that strategy pays off, and sometimes it doesn't!
This time, things worked out pretty good!

We decided to stay one more day in Oudtshoorn. We pretty much had the Oasis Shanti Backpacker Lodge to ourselves, and we still wanted to wander around town some more.
Plus, I needed to do some shopping!

Cango Caves Adventure Tour
This was too funny.
Some of our regular readers might remember when we did the Wild Cave Tour at Kentucky's Mammoth Caves over three years ago. It was a pretty strenuous exercise, and we weren't sure if this would be the same. Turns out that this was a lot less "wild", but still fun nonetheless!

Had the highway to ourselves...
We were only planning a short driving day, maybe 175 kms (109 miles) or so from Graaff Reinet to Willowmore. But when we arrived at Willowmore, we didn't see much that was worth keeping us there!
So we carried on.

Great views, and animals too!
Busy day yesterday, and lots of photos to prove it!
We did the short drive from the town of Graaff Reinet to Camdeboo National Park at 8:30am or so before it got too hot out. They were calling for a high of 33C (92F), and we wanted to do a short hike and see some of the animals.

The town of Graaff Reinet
Our first priority yesterday morning was to get our internet working again. We have two SIM cards and we use one each for our internet access. Turns out that Ruth's expired on Thursday night, and mine expired on Friday night.
So we woke up on Saturday with no internet.

Keys Locked in Car
We left Bethulie at just after 9:00am, and had a loose plan to make it to Graaff Reinet, about 364 kms (226 miles) away.
We're actually slowly making our way back to Cape Town, just not really deciding what the next destination is until we get to it!

Yesterday. And a few other oddball things...
Just have to catch you up on a few different things. First of all, our plans for the summer of 2014. As our regular readers know, we managed a campground in the middle of Saskatchewan, Canada last summer.
This coming summer season, we are doing the same thing. But at a different campground.

January Expenses
It only just occurred to me that we never posted our January expenses. I think we just had so much going on at the beginning of February, and then we've had poor (or non-existant!) internet a few times during the month.
January was again a little higher than normal for us, but when we break it all down we actually did okay. We spent a total of $2,054 in January.

Back in South Africa
Hard to believe that it's only two weeks tomorrow and we will be heading back across the pond to New York City.
We left Lesotho (our 21st country visited!) on Tuesday morning. We didn't have a firm destination in mind, but we did know the general area we were heading for. We ended up in the town of Bethulie, South Africa.

40 kms (25 miles) in two days... (part 2)
Okay, in Part 1, we had told you that we were about to go to sleep in our fancy accommodation. Actually, it was not bad. We had sleeping bags that we had rented from the lodge, and they had foam mattresses for us to sleep on.
And because there is no electricity (although we did have a candle!), you pretty much go to sleep when the sun goes down.

The Happy Hippo
The best backpacker hostel in Durban? While we don't know for sure that it's the best, we can't figure why you would need anything better.
We recently spent two nights at The Happy Hippo in Durban. Great location, and comfortable surroundings. Oh, and two nights in Durban isn't long enough!

40 kms (25 miles) in two days... (part 1)
When we completed our four hour horseback riding excursion a few days ago, we had decided that any more than that in one outing would be too much.
So we made a plan that any longer trips would be better done on foot, with the horses carrying our gear. The best of both worlds!

High above Lesotho
We went for an ambitious hike yesterday that took us up to Mount Fuku-fuku. We have no idea what the distance was, but that the literature had said it went along the top of a ridge of mountains and that it was for "experienced hikers only". And that it was an all day hike.
So a guide was assigned to us, and we set off at about 8:30am.

Our first hike in Lesotho!
By the way, Lesotho is pronounced "Ley-soo-too". Just so you know.
Some of you had asked how we are managing to get on the internet here in the middle of the Lesotho mountains. There is a very weak cell signal coming from an old 2G EDGE connection. We are connected, but it's slower than dial-up! Still better than nothing at all.

The tiny Kingdom of Lesotho
Back at the beginning of October, we had been in the city of Ottawa tourist office on the 18th floor of an office building in downtown Ottawa, Canada. Across the hall was the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho.
We went and knocked on the door!

Through the Gates of Paradise
Well, I don't quite know how to tell you about the last couple of days, but somehow we need to try and get caught up on our adventures. So this is a condensed version of things, but it's difficult...because we've seen and done so much! To top it all off, we're in the middle of nowhere and have limited electricity and very slow internet. Still, we're determined to tell you what a great few days we've had!
We left Durban on Feb 7, and stayed at a nice backpacker place called Amphitheater Lodge that night. Then on the 8th, we drove into another new country...the tiny Kingdom of Lesotho.

Not long enough in Durban!
We didn't plan very well. Actually, what happened is that we spent too much time on "the Garden Route" which is overrated as a tourist destination. Sure, it's nice enough, but we should have driven through a little quicker and allowed for more time in this area.
So, we only had one full day in the city of Durban, but it gave us enough of a feel for the city that we know we want to return one day!

Arrived in the city of Durban!
We'll squeeze two days into one post here, simply because most of it was taken up with driving! We left Wild Lubanzi backpackers lodge on the morning of the 4th, and arrived in the tropical port city of Durban on the afternoon of the 5th.

Drizzling, but still a great day...
Our regular readers might have noticed that we're trying to play catch up from our six days away without much internet. We did have enough connectivity to check emails, but definitely not enough for a blog post, especially with pictures. So check the prior posts to make sure that you didn't miss anything because we're trying to do some extra posts until we're caught up!
On Monday February 3rd, we went for a hike. Rain or shine.

Bulungula to Wild Lubanzi
We enjoyed our time at Bulungula, and we're glad we made the effort to go there. But the lodge itself could be a little more organized. It takes them forever to make up your bill, so if you want to get an early start you should settle up with them the night before. When we went to pay our bill in the morning, the girl was off having a shower and we had to wait around for a half an hour. Not that big of a deal, but there were other people waiting too.
Our bill for 4 nights was R1,685 ($177) and that included one dinner meal, parking, and a few bar drinks. Not bad. We had brought food for self catering so we made our own meals the rest of the time.

How many cows did you pay for your wife?
On Saturday February 1st, we did the Village Tour offered by Bulungula Lodge. The idea of the lodge is to have the visitors interact with the community as much as possible, and vice versa. This tour shows you a lot of local customs and it was certainly the most interesting part of our stay in the community.

Canoeing and pancakes at Bulungula
Our second full day, we decided to go canoeing. The activities at the lodge are run by locals, with part of the proceeds going to the community, and the rest going to the person running the activity. The excursion cost R80 ($8.40) each. This particular day, it was a young guy named Lindo who was running the trip. He was 24 years old, and this is his only job.
Bulungula - A walk on the beach
We had a goal on our first full day at Bulungula. To relax!
They have a lot of activities to take part in if you want to, and they're very reasonably priced. We eventually did the canoeing and the village tour, but they'll be detailed in upcoming posts. For today, we went for a walk on the beach. We've never seen so many different seashells!

Arrival at Bulungula
This post goes back to January 29th. We did a 257 km (160 mile) drive from the East London area to the Bulungula Lodge located on South Africa's "Wild Coast".
The drive took us into an area where there aren't many tourists, and really the only tourist accommodation is a few remote backpacker lodges along the very scenic coastline.
But first, you have to get there!
