That was a productive morning!

We drove Igor over to the mechanic shop at 8:00am, went over a few things with them, then walked back to the house. They weren't exactly sure how long it would take because I had asked them to check the brakes, but they said to check back with them in a couple of hours.

We went back around 11:00am, and Igor was ready to go! They changed all four shocks (that I had supplied) and did a front wheel alignment. They couldn't find any leaks in the brakes, but bled this system and it all seems fine now.

Total cost? 1,290 pesos ($97 CAD, $70 USD, €60).

Wow. That's for everything. Pretty cheap, even by Mexico standards. And everything appears to be done properly. Igor drives straight, handles much better, not as much rolling going over bumps, and even the steering wheel is straight. It had been slightly off center ever since we bought him. I'm impressed!

The old shocks!

From there, we went up to a place called "Muebles Rusticos" (Rustic Furniture). It's all handmade natural wood furniture. They have a lot of already made items, but they also have books you can go through of custom made items that you can have duplicated. Or, they will build your own custom made items.

You would think all of this would be expensive, but the prices were actually slightly cheaper than the furniture website we had come across. And of course it is all solid wood rather than cheap particle board.

Inside the Muebles Rusticos store.

We ended up ordering two wardrobe closets, two coffee tables, four bedside tables, a kitchen cabinet and countertop, and a kitchen island. The total came to 29,500 pesos ($2,225 CAD, $1,590 USD), which coincidentally is exactly the amount we had wanted to spend!

The only downside is the stuff won't be delivered until the first week of December. But that's okay because we won't be here much of November anyhow.

We spent a couple of hours relaxing on our patio overlooking the lake.

We have three other pieces of furniture that are already here and made by the same company... a couch, loveseat, and chair. But all of the cushions are missing. We have no idea what happened to them. Anyhow, we are going into town today to find an upholstery shop and see how much it will cost to have cushions made.

Then at 6:00pm it was World Series time! And the Blue Jays came through with a win, now leading the series 3-2 against the Dodgers. They move back to Toronto for game 6 Friday night, and a possible game 7 Saturday night if necessary. The Dodgers are pitching Yamamoto tomorrow night, and he's going to be tough. It will be an exciting game either way!

  1. We once had new rear brakes installed on the Honda in Saltilo for $85 Canadian total. From your description I see Mexicans are still undervaluing their labour. I love that Mexican handmade furniture. Norma would always ask if there was some way she could take some home and my answer was always the same. "No problem, we can tie it onto the car dolly and take it. Only problem is, you will have to follow me and drive the car home." She would always change her mind! The last thing, and something I really wanted as well, was an almost full size concrete row boat and fisherman very reminiscent of Hemingway's "The Old Man And The Sea" . It probably weighed 2000 pounds but would have been perfect on our front lawn overlooking the ocean!

    1. The mechanic prices here in Mexico are still amazing it is one of the few things that we have found that haven't soared like some many other things that have. We are so happy that we have an older vechicle because that really helps with the pricing. Igor is still relatively easy to work on.

We like the Mexican made furniture too, it was just a matter of finding the right guy with the right prices. The other guy that gave us a quote was more than double what we are paying and for only four pieces of furniture. I think that the finished quality of the furniture might have been better than what we are going to get but we are quite happy to not have the finished product looking totally perfect at least we know that it will be well built as we have seen the quality of the work in the shop sowe have a good idea of what to expect.

That boat would have been quite the souvenir to have brought back home but we think you were smart not to have bought it, lol!

  2. I love the solid wood Mexican furniture, and it is really quite reasonable for bombproof and lovely, handmade stuff. We ordered our massive entertainment center (big center piece for our 77" TV and two side book cases) from an outfit that imports that type of solid wood furniture from Mexico. It wasn't cheap but will last long after we're gone, and it's so much more interesting looking and better built than anything we looked at here in the US. Glad you found that place - I think you're getting a lot for your money! I bet the cushions will be very reasonable for your sofa.

Good luck to the Blue Jays! When I saw the score this morning in my daily New York Times email, I thought of you immediately!

    1. We really like their furniture as well and we are glad that we were able to buy our furniture from a local guy. We know that the pieces are going to be well built and will last for a good long time.

We are glad that you found a place that sold Mexican furniture and yes, we are sure that the prices are a lot higher there than they are here but it is nice that you were able to get what you wanted.

We still haven't heard back from the guy about the price on the cushions yet. We honestly are sure what to expect price wise because the upholstery shop is in the town of Valle so it might be a bit more expensive. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Yep, the Blue Jays are doing great! We don't think that the Dodgers were expecting the Jays to be as strong as they are. Our fingers are crossed that the Jays come out on top tonight but the Dodgers have their best pitcher pitching tonight and we couldn't get a hit off of him last time, he is almost untouchable!

    1. We think so too. Kevin is very impressed with the work done on Igor and he is driving so much better now. Even though we drove him just a short distance, he can notice the difference, we are so happy to have that done now.

We are looking forward to getting our furniture at the beginning of December. 😊

  5. The furniture store looks awesome! We are currently looking for some new furniture and inside one of the box stores was a "Mexican Made" section. I really liked the furniture and so well built. I am thinking that the price is a bit steeper than where you are. LOL And that view is to die for.

    1. We think so too! It is nice to have a look at the type of workmanship first before purchasing the product. We are sure that we are going to be very happy with the furniture once we get it and we think the price is very reasonable. It is nice that you are able to get some Mexican made furniture in your area, I am sure you will be very happy with it and yes, the pricing will be a lot different to what we are paying, no doubt.

The view from our balcony is the main reason that we decided to rent this place! It is gorgeous. 😊
