First Spanish lesson!

When we started coming to Mexico in 2007, we didn't really know any Spanish. Ruth had taken some basic Spanish in high school, but her French was better than her Spanish.

Over the years, our Spanish is much improved... we can communicate what we need to, and we can ask questions and normally understand the answers. And we know a lot of words, but putting them into the correct sentence structure is difficult.

So although we can get by, we're actually a bit disappointed that we're not better than we are after all the time we have spent in Mexico. Part of that is likely because everything we've learned has been self taught, and from having conversations with the locals and looking up new words as necessary.

But we've never had lessons. Not because we haven't wanted to, but because we've never stayed in one place long enough to make it worthwhile.

So now that we're staying in one place (on and off) for hopefully a few years, we wanted to immerse ourselves a little more. Valle de Bravo is not a gringo tourist hangout, so Spanish is a necessity. And, we met new friends Fernando and Yessie who are bilingual and we made an agreement with Yesie to spend three hours a week with us so that we can learn more.

Yesterday was our first lesson!

We started with the basics.

As with learning anything, practice makes perfect. We covered a lot of ground over the first hour. We go back again today, and Thursday. And the same next week... Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

So, we're excited about that.

Also yesterday, I totally cleared out everything in the downstairs bedroom and hallway. The owner had a lot of junk being stored in there, and he had said he would move it out, but that's on Mexican time. I wanted it done now, so I moved everything into our carport. At least now we can get the painting done down there.

And how about them Blue Jays! I'm sure Seattle fans are feeling a little down in the dumps today, but it's the reverse reaction in Toronto... and in fact most of Canada! Seattle was up 2-0, then 3-2, but ending up losing 4-3 to Toronto. What a great game it was to watch... if you are a Jays fan!

Next stop, the World Series with game one in Toronto on Friday night. They are playing the Dodgers though, and there is no question that the Dodgers are a very strong team. The Jays are the underdogs, but maybe they can work some more October magic! Exciting times to be a Blue Jays fan!

And in Canada...
