Wow... 18 years ago!
All of our 18 years of adventures are detailed on this blog. You can even go back through the archives to our very first blog post. We've even heard from some readers who have started at the very beginning and read through all 6,351 blog posts. If you read 17 blog posts per day, it will take you a full year to read them all!
One of our first photos when we set off across Canada in October 2007.
Of course we had our dog Whiskey with us back then. She was our faithful traveling companion until she passed away in 2011. She loved life traveling in the motorhome!
One of our first boondocking spots... under the bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Boy, we learned a lot that first year. We didn't know anything about battery management. We stayed in a lot of Walmart parking lots, but it didn't take us long to realize that's a last choice option for us! And we did far too much driving!
I have all of our financial statistics over all 18 years.
The very first 12 month period, we spent $22,875 CAD ($21,500 USD at the time). Mostly because we drove so much! We spent $6,700 on fuel the first year!
But for perspective, that $22,875 CAD is the inflation adjusted equivalent of $33,100 today! So when you figure that we will spend about $38,000 this year, we're actually not doing too bad!
November 4, 2007.
We also learned that first year that while winter camping in an RV in Canada is a unique experience, it's not something we want to do on a regular basis!
So we went south to Baja California for our first taste of Mexico...
Christmas Day 2007.
This is more our style!
It was much more difficult back then to access the internet. I ended up buying a little antenna dish that could pick up unsecured WiFi signals from a distance of over a kilometer.
Whisky and me and my little WiFi antenna.
So much easier now with our new Starlink where we can stay connected with you from anywhere!
We sure have had some adventures over the last 18 years. From shark cage diving in South Africa to climbing Africa's highest mountain, to driving 1,100 miles of gravel road to Canada's Arctic Ocean coast and a whole bunch in between.
It was a crazy decision to make back then... selling everything at age 45 and just taking off. But we wouldn't change it for anything.
I wonder what the next 18 years will bring!
