Our home for the next two weeks... what a great area!

We headed out of Valladolid with plans to make one stop... at a big Carrefour grocery store on the outskirts of the city.

Good thing it wasn't much of a detour... because it was closed!

We knew that most grocery stores are closed on Sundays here in Spain. But checking Google maps, all of the Carrefour stores were marked as open on a Sunday. I know better than to trust the opening times on Google maps, but this particular time I didn't double check on the company website.

Anyhow, our plan was to stock up for a week since I know that the place we are going is fairly remote. Plan B was to find a small corner store type of shop that is open in the nearest big city of Ourense that is closest to our destination, and just buy enough to get us through until Monday.

The first part of the drive wasn't very exciting.

We thought we were in Saskatchewan at times.

There are quite a few windmills being installed.

We stopped for a late lunch at the town of Puebla de Sanabria... we had seen a castle mentioned and it was a good spot to get out for an hour and stretch our legs.

Our wheels for the next 17 days.
2025 Audi A1.

We left the car parked there near the highway and walked on a trail into town.

Ruth, saying hello to a couple of friendly dogs along the way.

On the trail to town.

I wonder how old that wall is...?

There are a lot of "fixer upper" types of places around the castle in this town.

Looking over at the old highway and the new highway on the distance.

View from the castle of the more modern part of Puebla de Sanabria.

This town is on the old pilgrim route of the Camino de Santiago.

Another view of the newer part of town.

Another view.

Some of the older homes have been turned into bars and restaurants.

Another restaurant in the old section.

The Chapel of Saint Cayetano, built around 1690.

Old bridge, now used by pedestrians.

We continued on to Ourense, and as we arrived it started pouring with rain. In fact, we got parked up near the little grocery store, and couldn't get out of the car for about ten minutes. Eventually managed to pick up what we needed, and continued out of town heading northeast along the Rio Mino to the village of Os Peares. We turned onto a narrow mountain road, and stopped at a mirador (viewpoint).

The village of Os Peares.

We followed the narrow mountain road for about 7kms (4 miles). Fantastic, and exactly what we were looking for.

Long time readers might remember when we were in Italy in 2017, and we stayed in a small village that had lots of opportunity for walking. I was looking for a similar place here in Spain, and that's exactly what we found. We are in the tiny hamlet of Pombeiro, on the side of a hill overlooking the Sil River Canyon.

Unfortunately we had more rain on arrival, so no photos of the location until tomorrow!

But I can show you the interior of where we are staying...

The bedroom is simple, but comfortable.
We slept well last night!

The kitchen is well equipped, and even has a beautiful wood stove.

We have our own little patio that will get used when the sun returns!

The TV room.

The dining room.

It's actually a small apartment that is located below the main house where our hostess lives. She's a single older woman, and so friendly and helpful. Her English is about as good as our Spanish, so we have no problem communicating using a mixture of both languages!

The skies are clearing today, although there is still a 20% chance of a shower. However, the rest of the week looks beautiful, with highs around 22C (71F). Perfect for doing lots of exploring!

  2. Looks like a lovely area, but does the bedroom not have a window? That would bother me; I guess I would get a bit of claustrophobia? But other than that, all looks good. Enjoy your time there!
