We kind of thought we might get some nice views of the Sil Canyon, but unfortunately not. However, there were a lot of other interesting things to see along the way! In fact, it turned out to be a really good hike!
It was a perfectly gorgeous day, with a high of about 24C (75F).
Looking back at our village as we headed out.
Zoomed in on the 3 bridges at Os Peares.
You can see the railway track beside the river, and on the lower right, the road that leads to our village.
Ruth with a nice bottle brush tree.
A beautiful spring water source.
Not very far along, we came across this old ruin.
And another.
And another.
Some of them were so overgrown you couldn't get to them.
Then we came to the tombs. This is the site of an ancient church dating back to the 9th century. Apparently there were religious "hermits" living in the woods here.
Not much left of the church.
But the tombs are easily visible.
Apparently they were doing some archeological excavations here last year.
No idea how old these structures are.
This was the interior.
Looking back at our village.
Zoomed in.
Then we came across another interesting attraction along the route. At first, we just though it was a big rock balanced on op of another, and I took a picture of Ruth to show how big it was. But then we noticed something else.
Ruth and the big rock.
We walked around the other side and looked up!
Very strange. Not sure we've ever seen anything like it.
Some parts of the trail were just a little overgrown!
Ruth, emerging from the ferns.
A little chapel as we got closer to San Cosmede.
Pretty butterfly and flowers.
We got to San Cosmede and it's just a remote hamlet with probably 20 or so homes in various state of disrepair. Maybe five or six of them had been fixed up at some point and you could see there were people using them, although nobody was around. Could be they are only used as weekend retreats.
Ruth, in San Cosmede.
Our trail went under this frail looking structure.
The trail back home.
Another odd looking rock.
River and railway track.
The road that leads up to our place.
Lots of grapes being grown here.
Just a short hike, but lots to see along the way, and just enough ups and downs to get some good exercise as well. We both really enjoyed it!

And in Canada...
The big rock formations could be tafoni. These formations are a honeycomb-like network of pits and caverns caused by salt crystallization and weathering. Garth
