Cholula is where the largest pyramid in the world is located. The pyramid is also the largest man made monument in the world.
It's about a twenty minute walk to get to the center of Cholula and we set off around 11:00am.
This is the pyramid!
It doesn't look like a pyramid... it looks like a church built on top of a hill. And that's exactly what the Spanish thought when they arrived in the 1500's. They thought it was a hill, and didn't even realize they were building on top of a man made structure.
It's free to climb up, and it's worth it for the views in all directions.
Cholula.
Zoomed in on the San Gabriel Arcangel Convent.
Looking towards the city of Puebla.
Puebla.
We're not going to head into Puebla, but we might on our return towards the end of April.
Zoomed in on some interesting architecture.
Ussie and the church at the top.
Ussie and the view.
Normally, you have to pay to access the interior of the church at the top. But for whatever reason (Easter?) it was open for all yesterday.
The interior is very ornate.
Fancy chandelier.
Some of the ruins that have been excavated.
We remembered from our last visit that there was a really good taco stand that did tacos arabes. We found it, but it was closed! So we had to go find somewhere else for lunch. The market building is always a good place to find some inexpensive food, so we headed there.
Along the way, we came across this huge tourist trinket shop!
Cholula has many churches.
And a really big market building.
It always amazes me how we grow enough food to feed the population.
Pretty flowers.
Many different types of chorizo.
We found a carnitas place that was busy.
And there was a reason it was busy... they were delicious!
After lunch we went for a walk around some of the side streets.
How old is this building?
Lots of colors.
We went into the convent church.
Last time we were here it was closed for renovations.
Beautiful interior.
The upper railing is really well done.
Jacaranda tree in bloom on the street in front of the trailer park.
Today, we are doing the drive into the state of Veracruz and the Orizaba Volcano... the highest point in Mexico. It's about a two and a half hour drive to our destination area, although we really have no idea where we are going to overnight.
Oh, and happy birthday to grandson Cameron who turns 15 today! I wonder how many of our current readers were around when Cameron was born??

Super cheap deal on a 55" TV!
And in Canada...

Well I started following your blog a couple of months ago so I wasn't around when Cameron was born. He is an impressive fisherman! I really enjoy your blog and the beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you for following along with us, even if it has only been for a short time and we are glad that you are enjoying the pictures and the blog itself.
DeleteCameron is a great fisherman for sure. He really loved his time with us in Valle de Bravo back in January/February, he was out on the dock fishing every chance he had. Now, he can't wait to come back again.
I was around before Sadie was born and Cameron a toddler.
ReplyDeleteYou have definitely been following us for a long time now. Sade will be 13 in August, which again is hard to believe!
DeleteI've been following since the day you originally left Ottawa
ReplyDeleteWow, that is a long time!
DeleteI've been following since before you originally left Ottawa
ReplyDeleteYes, you have definitely been following us for a long! Thanks for taking the time after all these years to still be reading us. 😊
DeleteI can't remember if Sadie was born or a baby when I started reading your blog. Happy Birthday, Cameron. You are well on your way to becoming a wonderful young man! So many great adventures for lucky, lucky grandkids. Thanks again for your inside pictures of things. I always double-click on the pictures to take in every inch of the interiors. The high ceilings in the churches, every painting and statue, the "window shopping" in the trinket shop was fun. So much to see. Stuff I would buy. LOL Thanks again and carry on!
ReplyDeleteThen you have been following us for a very long time as well.
DeleteCameron is becoming quite the young man, it is hard to believe that he can start driving next year! We are so happy that he enjoys coming along with us on some of our adventures hopefully that will continue for many years to come.
We are so glad that you are enjoying the pictures and taking in all the details because some of these churches are full of details. We try our best to show eveyone what life is like in these cities and towns, there is always so much to see.
I would totally be going into that 'trinket' shop too!
ReplyDeleteEven we did, there was a lot of stuff in there but we thought the prices were a little high, still it was fun looking around.
