Busy day... lots of photos, and a surprise meetup with friends!

We wanted to do one more trip into the beautiful city of Orizaba. Still can't believe that more western tourists don't visit this area.

We went to all of the "touristy" highlights yesterday, and didn't see any other gringos.

There are several different museums that were recommended... some cheap, some free, and others that are accessible by a single purchase pass that costs only 25 pesos ($2 CAD, $1.43 USD) per person.

We started off at the Polyforum.

It was built between 1939 and 1944.

The original purpose was as an asylum for elderly women. But it was eventually bought by the city and repurposed to a multipurpose cultural center.

It's a really pretty property.

Not sure of the purpose behind this room. The books hanging from the ceiling were interesting!

Straight out of a Mad Max movie?

They have one room with some amazing doll houses.

The detail is incredible!

Next stop was the clothing museum. It was really well done... in fact all of the specialty museums were really well done. We're not normally museum people, but these were worth a visit...

Typical clothing from all regions of Mexico, as well as other parts of Latin America.

Dolls with local clothing.

Veracruz is the state we are in right now.

Then there was the children's museum... we went through that quite quickly, but it was still kinda fun!

E.T.... call home!

Ruth and the mirror maze!

Fancy table setting.

The last one was a museum dedicated to Cri-Cri. A series of animated characters derived from a popular Mexican children's songwriter. This was actually a really popular display, since many Mexicans grew up with these characters when the songs were written between 1930 to 1990, and they are still popular with children today.

The displays were really well done.

Every display has a song that goes with it.

Nice wall painting.

Papa Elephant.

The Eiffel Tower!

Next stop was the Hotel and Tourism Museum...

Ruth, checking in!

What a hotel room might have looked like in the 1600's.

And the late 1800's.

And in the 1960's.

Then we walked over to the Biori Botanical Gardens. Even though it's fairly small, and cost 50 pesos ($4 CAD, $2.90 USD) to get in, it's also really well done.

Caterpillar.

Hmm. Okay then.

There were a lot of turtles!

And a lot of beautiful flowers.

Ruth, saying hello to Mr. Turtle.

The European section.

The orchid building.

The orchid garden.

The Japanese Garden.

Too funny.

Then we walked back to the central area seeing some of the murals along the southern part of the river walk.

Back in the center.

Oh, and we had a pleasant surprise meetup with friends. I noticed on facebook that our friends Paco and Oti were in town so I sent them a note and they happened to be at the top of the teleferico. We waited for them to come back down and said hello for a few minutes. They were with Raul and Anita, one of the couples who own a home at the marina where our house is.

Kevin, Paco, Anita, Raul, Oti, and Ruth.

We really enjoyed Orizaba and area. Part of it is because of the wonderful host family we met here at the campground. But the area itself has such a lot to offer. Again, if we hadn't chosen the Valle de Bravo area to have a home base, I think it might have been here.

But, it's time to move on... we are leaving this morning and heading north towards the small city of Xalapa (pop 450,000)... the capital of the state of Veracruz. But we have a couple of things we want to see along the way, so no idea where we will overnight tonight.
