Day 3 - Cobh, Ireland, and this could get interesting!

We had traveled overnight from Falmouth, England and on Saturday morning we woke up at 6:30am docked at the port at Cobh, Ireland.

For those who don't know, Cobh is famous because it was the last port of call for the Titanic on its maiden (and only!) voyage to New York City.

It was about 9:00am when we got off the ship. No waiting in line at all because we were docked in port, so you simply walk off the ship. There's a railway station right there to take you for a 15 minute ride to the city of Cork and buses for those who had booked various tours.

We're not that interested in many of the tours, and even if we were they're very expensive. Which is fine, because we're quite happy just wandering around Cobh, plus we had mapped out a 12 km (7 mile) walk to do.

The Emerald Princess parked up for the day at Cobh, Ireland.

Irish pub on the main street.

Well done mural.

The cathedral and its location are spectacular.

Scenery in Cobh.

Looking back at the ship.

We stopped at the Titanic Memorial Park.

They had a lot of information boards telling interesting Titanic stories.

We saw this odd looking water tower in the distance.

But we found out from a another angle that it's actually two different structures.

We did get a little bit of greenery, but most of the route was along the road.

Scenery along the way.

It was actually a beautiful morning.
Mostly sunny with some clouds, and a high of 19C (66F).

We even saw some wildlife along the way!

We came across the oldest pub in Cobh.

Not very old by European standards, but still interesting. And it wasn't in the main area, so there were mostly locals inside. We're not having any of the expensive drinks on board, so we decided to treat ourselves in the pub.

This same pub would have served people going on the Titanic.

Can't go to Ireland without having a Guinness!

The Deck of Cards houses in Cobh.

And the backside.

The Cobh Cathedral.

View of Spike Island.

We had a late lunch of pizza (even with gluten free crust for Ruth) and then retired to the room where I had a nap and Ruth did some computer time. At 5:15pm we departed Cobh and headed out to the open sea.

The pilot boat follows alongside until we get out of port.

Scenery as we left port.

Goodbye Ireland!

We went down to the main restaurant for dinner and sat with two couples from Australia, and one couple from Spain. The Spanish couple were in their early thirties, and although her English was slightly better than our Spanish, we still got in a few words of Spanish for practice!

During dinner, the captain came on with a special announcement. We have three sea days and we won't see land again until we arrive in Greenland on August 6th. However there is a large storm tracking from Newfoundland to Ireland and it is right in our path. So we will be detouring north of the storm and taking a less direct route to Greenland.

It could get interesting though, as we will still catch part of the storm and sea swells are supposed to reach 5 meters (16 feet) with 80 km/h (50 mph) winds. They are warning us to use handrails and make everything in your cabin secure. It could get interesting!

Dinner was really good again...

Ruth had some kind of pineapple appetizer.

And she had shrimp curry with rice and poppadom.

I had the full roast beef with yorkshire pudding.
It was delicious and I don't think it could have been any better.
So tender!

But, I am trying to avoid red meat, so with a hamburger the day before I am back on chicken and fish for the next few days!

Coconut mousse for dessert.

Ruth had pistachio mousse.

The evening entertainment was a one woman show who was a contortionist and hula hoop expert. She was quite good, and really funny too. The audience is a bit dead though. She almost had to beg them to get a bit of noise and appreciation going.

There were two audience assistance volunteers.

Yikes!

She was really food with the hula hoops.

Today is the first of three sea days. It will be interesting to see how much busier the ship is with everybody on board during the day.
