Up to 10,000' altitude!

Yesterday we drove from pretty much sea level all the way up to 3000 meters (10,000'). What a refreshing change in temperature!

It was 40C (104F) when we left, and 25C (77F) when we arrived.

Igor had to work hard to get us up here, but he was up for the challenge.

We had to drive through a couple of towns before we started climbing.

But we can see the hills in the distance.

Starting to get a view.

We stopped for a break at the village of La Estancia.

We wanted to see the Cascadas de Niebla de Comaltepec (Niebla Waterfall) but when we got to that point we weren't sure about taking Igor down the road. So we managed to find a roadside spot where we could leave Igor on the main highway (which in reality is just a narrow two lane road) and we decided to walk the 3 kms to the waterfall.

It was so nice walking through the pine forest!

Despite the fact that it's dry season, the waterfall was still impressive.

There is a suspension bridge over the canyon, but we didn't trust it.
There were several broken boards.

I took a video for you...

Another natural stream.

We walked back to Igor, and did the final push to the top. There is an "ecotouristico" center at the top with cabins for a rent and a restaurant. They said it was fine for us to park overnight.

We decided to take advantage of their walking trail that led to a mirador (viewpoint). We weren't aware that it was so long! But it was a nice trail and really well done with rest stops along the way. Good thing, because after being near sea level for the last couple of weeks, our systems aren't used to being at 10,000'!

So beautiful up here.

The clouds move through quickly, and it's often foggy.

Me, climbing up the viewing tower.

There is an old zip line up here.
Doesn't look like it's used anymore.

To us, this is far better than being at the beach!

That's a cool tree.

Where Igor was parked for the night.

Of course we had another doggie friend!

If we can find enough places to stay, we're going to hang out up here for the week and hopefully do some more hiking. The temperatures up here are 25C (77F) during the day, and 12C (54F) overnight. Perfect!

  1. Beautiful falls and you found cooler weather. Do you ever get headaches at higher levels?
