The Canadian government says that the area we are headed to is listed as "Avoid non-essential travel!"
Your safety and security could be at risk. You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region based on family or business requirements, knowledge of or familiarity with the region, and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving.
Of course this is the same thing they've been saying ever since we started coming to Mexico in 2007.
But if you were a new traveler, it would be pretty easy to be swayed. I remember myself back in 2007 being a little nervous about driving in some of these areas of Mexico. However we've learned that these travel warnings take a minimal risk situation, and double it. Yes, there is a tiny chance something bad could happen in the yellow areas. And there is perhaps double the chance in the orange areas. But of course two times nothing is still nothing.
And of course we always keep in mind that perhaps your government doesn't have your best interests at heart. If we listened to these government travel warnings, we would have missed out on some of our best travel experiences!
So anyhow, on our last day here, we headed out to do some exploring. There was a trail showing on our map leaving from the far west side of town, but we didn't know if it was a foot path or a dirt road or what. And, Ruth had been talking to our host Sam (Samantha) who said there was a series of small waterfalls in that area.
But first, to say bye to the animals...
One horse came to say bye.
Then two more.
We walked by the bull ring.
It started out as a dirt road.
Big old tree.
Protected Natural Area.
During rainy season, this is a nice waterfall.
We decided to climb up.
Looking down.
Ruth, trying not to get her feet wet.
It was a fun climb up!
This is as high as we could go.
Heading back through town, we saw this old place with trees growing on the roof.
There was a Sunday afternoon baseball game on the go.
Strike!
Me with Guia...one of the friendly dogs here at the campground.
And so we are off to the dangerous states of Michoacan and Guerrero. It's about a six hour drive down to the coast, so we're unlikely to make it there today. We've got a couple of places in mind to stay overnight around the halfway mark.
