Heading back to Canada

Our 5 hour overnight flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles went without a hitch. It's funny how, after doing a 17 hour flight from San Francisco to Singapore and a 9 hour flight from Sydney to Honolulu... a 5 hour flight is nothing!

Hardly slept at all though. Sometimes I can nap, but this time I just couldn't doze off. Ended up watching the original American Graffiti movie. 1974, I think it was made?

So we arrived in Los Angeles at 5:00am, slightly ahead of schedule. We had a 3 hour wait until our flight to Minneapolis. We find that time waiting in airports goes by quickly. LAX is a terrible airport though. It has to be ranked close to the bottom of North American airports. Too busy, not enough seating, and just generally not attractive.

Ruth got a shot of what we think is Utah's Bryce Canyon.

We were not sat together for the 3 1/2 hour Minneapolis flight. It was full, and the system wouldn't allow me to choose our seats when we checked in. Might have something to do with the amount I paid for the tickets!

I had bought these flights a couple of months ago and paid $312 CAD ($236 USD) per person for us to fly from Honolulu to Saskatoon one way. Of course it was the milk run from HNL to LAX to MSP to YXE. But we don't care... just get me there as cheap as possible!

MSP (Minneapolis - St. Paul) airport is a direct contrast to LAX. Bright concourses with lots of windows and shops and nice bathroom facilities. Tons of seating, with all the latest electrical connections and charge outlets for all of our electronic gadgets. And, they don't hesitate to advertise that they were one of the top ranked airports for 2016, 2017, and 2018.

And tons of  room to go for a long walk to get some exercise between flights.
Without ever leaving security.

And lots of food choices...

Dinner.

Yes, cafeteria style, but only $9 USD ($12 CAD) per plate, which is not bad for an airport meal!

So, just about ready to go for boarding for our flight to Saskatoon. Next blog post from Cabri Regional Park where we worked for 4 summers. It will be odd to be there enjoying the park for a change!

  1. Welcome home. You haven't missed summer at all here, in Alberta it sucked. I'm sure Saskatchewan wasn't much better. Enjoy visiting Cabri

    1. Well that is good to hear! Yes, talking to people here in Cabri it sounds like it was much the same, very hot in May not so warm in June and a couple of good rain storms in July that caused two mini flash floods in the park.

It is funny to be at the park and not have to work for a change. :-)

  2. Fab photo Ruth took, no idea if it is is Bryce Canyon or not but it invited exploration. We just accept whatever seats are offered but how now learned to ask at the boarding gate if there is any chance to change. Previously I ordered gluten free meals and was told that with a meal pre order they didn't like you to switch seats. Trust you have now arrived safely for your next adventure. Have fun.

    1. Thank you Glen! I am pretty confident that it is Bryce Canyon. If you are in that area, you must check it out, it is absolutely stunning.

These flights never had any meals included in the price so it would never have been an issue if we could have changed seats but all flights were booked solid so no chance of changing seats. Luckily there was only one of the flights where we weren't together and Kevin was only one seat directly in front of me.

Yes, we have arrived safely at our destination, and are now enjoying catching up with friends for a few days before continuing on to Ottawa.

  3. Nice shot of (maybe) Bryce. In southern Utah you can pretty much aim your camera in a random direction and get a scenic shot. We'll be travelling that way next month.

    1. Thank you! I am pretty sure it is but not 100% sure. You are totally correct though about pointing your camera in any direction and being able to get a beautiful shot of the scenery. We think that Utah has to be one of the most photogenic states in USA, it is absolutely beautiful there.

  4. I use my ear plugs and a surgical mask to cover my mouth. No one can see my mouth hanging open.

That was a good deal on the airport food. Good find.

    1. We have to laugh at the surgical mask to cover you mouth because it is so funny how our mouths hang open when we fall asleep. I know mine did! :-P

It was a great deal for our meal at the airport and it tasted really good too. :-)

  5. I hate LAX, it really must be the worst one in the US. So many terminals, dirty & old. I like the look of the Minnesota airport and great airport food too!

    1. Totally agree and if we can avoid LAX we would but sometimes we just have to suck it up as part of the travel experience.

Minnesota airport is totally opposite though, we loved that airport! :-)
