Almost ran out of fuel!

We left the Milton Showgrounds at about 10:30am and headed back to the coast where I had seen a few short coastal walks.

The first one was about 3 kms (1.9 miles) round trip. Just enough to get the blood flowing.

It was a nice enough walk through the forest, then to a beach access point with an overlook.

Just another Australian beach.

Ruth, looking for whales.
Didn't see any this time though.

Then, we drove around to the next area at Cunjurong Point.

I knew the fuel gauge was getting low. It had been at about 1/4 tank when we left this morning. I should have backtracked a mile or two to a fuel station, but I just assumed there would be another along the way.

And I was right. Sort of.

From this angle, you can see the top of Pigeon House Mountain where we hiked the other day.

Green Island is a really pretty spot.

The trail led us to another viewpoint.

Zoomed in, you can once again see Pigeon House Mountain.

During lunch, I checked to see where the nearest gas station was. Lucky enough, they showed one in the nearby village of Bendalong. It would probably be expensive, but I planned on only putting in enough to get us to the next main town.

It was only about 5 kms (3 miles) to get there, and we pulled up beside the station. It was actually just a little general store with a couple of pumps out front. But the whole store was under renovation and the pumps were covered up.

I checked the phone and it the nearest gas station was another 27 kms (17 miles).

The gauge was reading midway between the empty mark and the 1/4 full mark. I figured that had to be good for 50 kms (30 miles), at least. And the low fuel warning light hadn't come on yet.

And it turned out I was right. A few miles before we got there, the warning light came on.

I was pretty sure we were going to be okay, but we've never ran it this low before so you don't always know for sure when empty really means empty!

I filled it right up, and it took 58 liters. The tank is 70 liters, so we still had a ways to go yet.

Then we drove back to the coast and found a nice free overnight spot near Cudmirrah. A rough entrance road getting in, but I just put Bundy in four wheel low, and he walked right in here.

A rough entrance road.

But it led to a nice spot.

Here's where we are now!

  1. Glad you made it Safely to the Fuel Station. Diesel Injectors use the Fuel to keep cool. Run it too low too often could be a costly mistake.
Be Safe and continue Enjoying the beauty of Australia.

    It's about time.

    1. We are glad that we made it safely to a fuel station as well. The issue wouldn't have really been an issue if the other place wasn't under renovations. We know that running out of fuel could damage a diesel engine but haven't really read anywhere where just running low on fuel can cause an issue, anyways that being said we should have filled up a little sooner.

    1. We knew that Australia had a lot of beaches but we never realized that it had that many beaches! Yes, there is plenty more for us to see on another trip to Australia, sometime in the future. :-)

  3. I guess you get to know your rig or vehicle and you know the limits. We've been close but have never run out. Ever.

    1. Yes, that is correct and Kevin knows Sherman really well and he knew the Little Blue Car really, really well but Bundy is still pretty knew to us and we have never had him down that low before. We have never run out either and hopefully never will. ;-)
