You need a lifejacket for this hike!

Back in 2021 we did a rafting tour of the Osumi River Canyon here in Albania. It was a lot of fun with some great scenery.

At this time of year the water levels are too low to do rafting, so instead they run guided trekking tours through the canyon. You don't need hiking boots though... you need a life jacket for this hike!

It was about an hour and a half drive to get to the departure point. Then, they get you all suited up with neoprene wetsuit pants, a helmet, and a life jacket.

Ruth, ready to go!

I had thought that the neoprene wetsuit pants would be too hot because the temperature was 36C (97F), but by the time you got wet, they actually helped keep you cool when outside the water.

Down to the river to get started.

Looking down river in the direction we are headed.

Ruth, floating down river.

Ussie on the river.

It was actually quite busy. We weren't sure what to expect, but we had 23 people in our group as well as two guides. And, there had been another group that went out a little before us.

Zoomed in on a group ahead of us.
You can see someone jumping off the rock on the right.

Our group's turn.

We need to cross the river to get to the group photo point.

Some odd looking rock formations.

Very strange.

Some places we floated down the river, and other places we had to walk.

The water was a bit chilly for the first ten seconds.
After that, it simply felt very refreshing!

That rock would be our next group photo.

My view as I floated downstream.

Ruth floating along beside me.

We all climbed up on this rock for the next group photo.

Group photo number 2!

Trekking through Osumi Canyon.

Then you get to a point where you do a ten minute hike up the side of the canyon and a van meets you at the top and brings you back to the starting point.

Lots of fun for €35 ($56 CAD, $41 USD) per person. They said we did about 5 kms (3 miles) in the canyon, but it felt like less. A great activity for a super hot day!

The people in our group were from Europe... Italy, Germany, Belgium. I don't think there was anybody from North America except for us, and there were no local Albanians either.

And in Canada...

  1. That looked like an enjoyable adventure with lots of great scenery.
Some of the cuts in the rock, could have been made by glacial erosion.
Stay Safe and Enjoy the Adventures to come.

    It's about time.
