Wandering Southampton, and welcoming the Emerald Princess to port.

It was a gorgeous day here in Southampton yesterday. High of 25C (77F) with sunshine and a few clouds. Exactly what they forecast.

We went and did some exploring around town, and some pre-cruise shopping. Ended up spending about about £40 ($73 CAD, $53 USD) on clothes.

We had never been to Southampton before. It's actually not a bad city with a lot of history, including being the departure point for the Titanic's maiden voyage.

The God's House Tower.
Built in the early 1400's.

Quite a few sections of the original city wall are still standing.

Southampton Port is where you can catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight.

There it goes!

Southampton Port.

Castle Gate.

The Bargate was part of the original city wall.

Ruins of a church.

Kind of interesting how they've maintained it.

The Titanic Pub.

The Titanic Pub.

The D-Day Wall.

Soldiers names inscribed into the bricks.

Another part of the old city wall.

Monument to the Mayflower.

So we're wandering around, and we came across an interesting car display. These cars are all full size replicas of cars that became famous in various movies. It was kinda fun...

From two different Batman movies.

Ghostbusters!

The tow truck from Cars.

New mall, and the old wall.

Car display.

We walked a lot! Went to a few different charity shops, but couldn't find a lot. It didn't take us long to remember that we hate shopping for clothes! Ruth did get a dress and a top, and I got a shirt and a sweater. The rest we bought new, but it was all stuff that we needed anyhow. We weren't about to spend a lot of money just for clothes to wear on a cruise. I also bought a t-shirt and a pair of shorts and Ruth got a pair of sandals.

Fast forward to this morning! We decided to get up at 6:00am and watch the arrival of the Emerald Princess into Southampton Port. It's only a 15 minute walk for us and because we were there yesterday we knew the best place to go to get a view.

Here she comes!

The Emerald Princess was built in 2007.

And underwent a major refurbish in 2019, and a minor one this past spring.

The Emerald Princess.

3,080 passengers and 1,200 crew members!

The Disney Fantasy was also in port this morning.

We have to be out of our apartment by 11:00am, and coincidentally that's also the time we're allowed to go check in. Hope the rain holds off long enough for us to walk over there without getting soaked.

Stay tuned over the next 16 days as we bring you daily updates about life aboard a cruise ship!

  1. I can't believe you got all those clothes for that price, even at thrift stores. Good going! That is one big boat. I have zero desire to take a cruise but am still very interested to know how your experience goes. The city of Southampton looks attractive!
