Sherman is for sale

Yesterday's blog title was "The final drive", and it may well have been.

Sherman the motorhome has taken us to many fabulous places, but it's time for him to move on. We think he's best suited to become a "cottage" at a rural property somewhere, but if someone wanted to fix him up enough to continue driving him, well that could happen too. And he is priced according to both possibilities.

He's now got 134,500 miles (215,000 kms) on him. And even though we just finished driving 2,000 miles (3,200 kms) or so problem free, he is quite simply getting tired.

We noticed a lot more squeaks and rattles over the last couple of weeks. We think he has done just too many bad roads over the past few years!

Mechanically, he still runs well, but things are getting "loose". And with Ontario's stringent safety check requirements for selling used vehicles, someone will have to put a few dollars into repairs to get him to pass. The main cost would be to replace both front windshields that are cracked. There are a few minor other things as well.

As far as the motorhome part of it goes, there are problems there too. Nothing that bothered us, but they may bother a prospective buyer. The on board generator doesn't work. The roof air conditioning doesn't work (neither does the dash A/C, but it never has since we bought the motorhome back in 2007). The built in furnace doesn't work, but we always used our Mr. Heater Buddy. The oven doesn't work. There is no microwave, and there is no television.

There are no water leaks, but there has been in the past before we owned it. I repaired the problems years ago. But there is a little bit of delamination. It's been there forever and hasn't got much worse

On the bright side, the solar panels and batteries are still working well. The batteries are old, but they have been well looked after. The 10 year old solar panels are still operating at about 80%. The fridge works perfectly on both propane or electric. The stove works fine, as does the hot water heater.

The interior is clean and in good condition overall.

I have it advertised at $6,500 CAD ($4,900 USD) as is, and the price is firm. Whenever I sell anything, I come up with the lowest price that I would be willing to accept, and I make it firm. No need to haggle back and forth, or to entertain ridiculous offers. That's the price, and I think it's fair to both the buyer and the seller. Unless I'm way off base, someone will pay it.

  1. For all the years and all the miles, Sherman sure has a lot of stories to tell! I hope whoever buys it goes back and reads your blog from the beginning and learns of the adventurers that Sherman has experienced!

    1. Sherman sure does! He has given taken us to so many places and we have seen so many things, we will always have those memories and will think fondly of him. We hope that when he finds his new owners that they will want to read about his adventures as well. :-)

  2. This is kinda sad. Maybe because he has a name and isn't just a mechanical nobody. Sherman has a personality and your family member for a long time. I hope he finds a home that will take care of him. I hate to think of him in a field, alone and withering away.

    1. It is sad but it has to be done and we knew this day would eventually come. we are just so happy that we have some many pictures and memories of him that he will never be forgotten.

Yes, we hope he will find a good home somewhere too! That is our only fear, that he is put to pasture somewhere and then never used, that would just be so sad. :-(

  3. There are still times when I miss our Class A that we sold back in 2012. Didn't get nearly what I thought it was "worth", but we were living in Vienna, and I was paying storage on an RV that we were not sure when we'd come back to. Oh well. Always a bit sad selling or giving up a vehicle. Especially one associated with many good times. Seems like a decent price. Good luck.

    1. Kevin feels very good about the price, I guess time will tell if he is off base on that or not.

Yes, it is sad giving up a vehicle, I remember how we felt when we sold the Little Blue Car a few years ago.

  4. Hey, we all have different wants and needs. Everything sells, eventually. FYI, we sold our '99 Mabel, Class C Coachman 29" two weeks ago for listed price. Advertised it four days and closed the deal in a WalMart Parking lot in North Bay. :) :) Go figure. We are picking up a new to us 26'er tomorrow in Newmarket. Happy dance going on here.

    1. Yes, you are totally right, and we are sure that there is someone out there that is just perfect for Sherman.

Sounds like you did well on selling your motorhome. Enjoy your "new" motorhome, I am sure you will make many new memories in it. :-)

  5. What a marvelously straightforward attitude you have in selling your motorhome. Buying and selling between individuals would be more pleasant and efficient if more people had your attitude.

Perhaps you should have mentioned explicitly that the new owner is free to change the motorhome's name, if desired. (grin)

    1. Thank you! Hopefully we will find the right buyer for Sherman and once they buy him, they are welcome to change his name to whatever they want. It will be their time to make new memories. :-)

  7. Awwww, I hate that you and Sherman will be parting ways, but of course I completely understand. And I too appreciate your honesty regarding his deficiencies. I am sure you'll find a buyer at that price, and hopefully he'll continue to be well-loved for many more years to come.

    1. We are sad too but we have new adventures that we want to make and unfortunately they don't include Sherman and we don't want him sitting around and not being used while he waits for our return, it just doesn't make sense.

We really hope that he will find a new owner that will look after him and make new memories in him. :-)

  8. Definitely the end of an Era. I've known Sherman since 09 and followed you then.
Are there plans for another RV for more travels in North America or are you considering crossing the pond.
Be Safe and Enjoy this adventure.

    It's about time.

    1. Yep, it is definitley the end of this chapter in the book for Sherman.

Our hopes are going to Europe and buying a motorhome there and traveling around. It obviously will all depend on how things are in the world come October. There are just so many opportunities available to us so we will play things by the ear.

  9. Sad to see Sherman leave your exciting and adventurous life. But he has served you well and we are glad we got to join him for the 4 month trip in Mexico in 2018! I am sure someone deserving of Sherman will come your way. Good luck and happy trails Sherman.

    1. We are sad too but there comes a time when we knew we would eventually have to part ways. He really has served us well and he really doesn't owe us a thing. We are so happy for all the memories that he has given us. We are happy that you were part of those memories too! :-)

  10. He provided us a great meeting place where we had fun, laughed, some good meals together, and happy hours. Nothing is forever. You got your money's worth that's for sure.
