Happy 4th of July!

We wandered over to the local grocery store here in Lovell, Wyoming to pick up a few things. Things are typically a bit more expensive at these independent stores, but they have sales too, so you never know what you're going to find.

First stop in the produce aisle, we saw iceberg lettuce at $1.69 USD ($2.29 CAD). A bit pricey, but you have to eat! We hummed and hawed between that and the romaine, but eventually grabbed an iceberg.

In the snack foods aisle, we grabbed a bag of corn nacho chips and then I noticed a sale on another brand... larger bags and if you buy 3 they were only $1.67 USD ($2.26 CAD) per bag. Great deal! That will do us for the rest of our time in the U.S.. Just gotta find somewhere to put them where they won't get crushed!

Walking back to the campground, I checked the bill, as we always do, to make sure it was correct.

It turns out the iceberg lettuce was $1.69 per pound!!  So that 1.7 pounds of lettuce cost $2.92 USD ($3.96 CAD). I don't know about you, but I have never seen iceberg lettuce priced by the pound. We were already halfway back, so we didn't turn around but we will go back in today if the store is open and check what it said on the sign. Maybe the girl just made a mistake putting it through at a per pound calculation.

We also went for a bike ride. Not that many exciting things to see around town, but we got some good exercise. We went out for an hour and a half and did 14 miles (23 kms).

Lake Lovell looks okay, but it's too shallow for any recreation.

It was a nice day though!

A bit of a view.

In the afternoon, I changed Sherman's oil. It occurred to me while I was doing it that this might be the last time!

It's been an okay two night stay here in Lovell at their free campground, but there isn't enough to do in the area so we are moving on. We're looking forward to doing the scenic drive into Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area today!

Happy 4th of July!

I had to get out my 4th of July t-shirt for today! Boy, we never expected to be spending July 4th here in the U.S., but it is what it is and we are enjoying our time here. The areas that we have been in over the past 3 months have been very welcoming to us when anybody we talk to hears that we are Canadians. Thanks to the U.S. for accepting us in such odd circumstances!

  1. The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area looks really interesting. I am looking forward to some really great boondocking locations.

    1. Unfortunately they don't allow any boondocking in Bighorn Canyon Recreation Area but you can boondock outside of it at the Yellow Tail Habitat Wildlife Management Area. Also there are tons of great boondocking spots up in the Bighorn National Forest but if you do it, we would recommend taking the US-14 Hwy and then come in on US-14 Alt from that direction. The US-14 Alt is VERY steep coming from Lovell, unless you do the drive first thing in the morning when your engine is cool and the outside air is cool.

    1. We are having a great time, just doing our own thing and staying away from people as much as possible, which really isn't all that hard to do for us. We hope you can get back out on the road soon. Yes, this COVID thing really is a pain for everyone. :-(

  3. Iceberg lettuce here at the HEB in Mexico is $.54 USD :) I don't see how Americans can afford to eat.

    1. We are missing Mexico so much, we love all the fresh fruit and vegetables there and the prices. We can't figure out how they can afford to eat either. We have really noticed it this year especially with the exchange rate that we have to deal with.

  4. There has to be a mistake on that lettuce. Or maybe when you cut it open you'll find a gold nugget.... ;c)

    1. You have to remember this is just a small town so usually things are more expensive, but even that is just a "wee" bit expensive! Haven't found a gold nugget yet!!!
