Ruth needs a new laptop

Slept fine at the free RV parking area at Port Albert. We went for a walk around town in the morning, but by the time we were getting ready to leave, the wind was picking up.

And, they were calling for gusty winds all day. Nice bright blue skies, but gusty winds!

And anybody who has ever driven any kind of RV knows that gusty winds are not fun to be doing any kind of driving in!

So I had found a place only 36 kms (22 miles) away. Not much of a driving day, but at least a change of scenery!

Walking around town, we had clear blue skies.

A white-faced heron.

An uneventful, although windy, drive to McLoughlins Beach parking area. Picnic tables, a washroom building, and nobody else around. We parked up there and put the solar panel out to charge the battery.

At McLoughlins Beach.

We spent some time on the internet, and then went for a walk. By this time, some cloud cover had come in, but it was still windy.

The trail led us to the boat ramp area, and then across to the beach itself. At the boat ramp area, we decided that we would be better off parking there for the night. No signs saying we couldn't, and in Australia, that's fair game. Besides, there was absolutely nobody around. And, there was a lot more shelter from the wind.

And the hoons!

Totally deserted beach.

But, no ambition to walk on the beach, so we turned back.

What are the hoons? Well, it's an Australian term to describe the usually youthful people who get pleasure from spinning their tires. Sometimes done in a gravel parking lot, just for kicks.

Stop the hoons!

Given the sign, and the fact that you could easily see the spinning tire marks in the parking lot, we made the wise decision to move on to the boat launch parking area. It's a Tuesday night, so you wouldn't expect problems, but then again the kids are on a two week school break just now.

The toilet facilities.

As I've said before, Australia is great for it's ample supply of public toilets. Here at the boat launch area, they have what they call a "long drop" toilet. Can you tell why they call it that?

And how about that wheel chair access ramp?

Parked for the night.

Tomorrow, we head into the town of Sale. Yes, pronounced just as it is spelled.

And hopefully we can find a laptop on sale in Sale!

We've been having problems with Ruth's Asus tablet convertible laptop. We bought it at a good price four years ago, but it gave us some problems in the first year and we sent it back under warranty. For a couple of years it was fine, but now it's giving us problems again.

You would expect a laptop to last more than 4 years, but given that it only cost $75 a year, we don't feel too bad about replacing it. We'll see what we can come up with in town tomorrow.

Tuesday's drive, 36 kms (22 miles).

    1. It is funny but when you are a kid or even a young teenager, you just don't pay much attention to stuff like that. It seems that only when you get older do your eyes open up and see what is actually out there and then start taking it all in.

  3. Regarding Ruth's Laptop, if you get a new one, make sure it has a SSD drive, which has no moving parts and will boot faster and probably last longer. A 256gb will probably work, unless she stores lots of pictures or videos. I put a 1tb SSD drive in my 3 year old laptop and it boots 10 times faster and runs faster too. Have fun!

    1. We took you up on your suggestion, thanks Hans. We spent a little more doing that but hopefully it will last me that much longer. I don't think my computer will work as fast though as yours though as it only has the AMD processor but I really don't need to worry much about speed for the things that I do on the computer.

  4. Definitely wise not to travel on Windy days and even more so on roads that you have never traveled before.
Be Safe and Enjoy looking for a Laptop.

    It's about time.

    1. Lol, we were lucky enough not to have any bother us so we didn't have to rat them out. :-)

  6. Well, I'm sure there are plenty of guys who would volunteer and all, but it seems kind of crude for her own husband to be soliciting and......oh, wait. Are you talking about a computer?
    Never mind.

  7. I have GOT to stop trying to read headlines quickly. My e-mail started with "Ruth needs a..." then stopped. I had to click through to find out it wasn't a kidney transplant or something serious. Laptops, well, they can be replaced. Ruth is too nice just to be taken lightly!

  8. Laptops are now disposible items. Mine cost $179 and it's built like an armored tank. Can't find another like it. Now they have lots of memory, 550 Gb of storage but no longer come with DVD/CD port. Times, they are a changing.

    Nice pic of the heron!

    1. Unfortunately they are but we always try to get every ounce of life out of ours before giving in a getting a new one.

We have no problem with them not having a DVD/CD port, we really are more interested in the storage space. My new computer is more than we were wanting to spend but most of the new smaller models don't have enough storage space it is normally either 64gb or 128gb and that just wasn't enough, this one has 256gb of space so it should last me for a good long time, fingers crossed.
