"Dolphins.... there are dolphins in the river!"

It's a great free campsite here at Clyde River National Park, but the two available sites are both in all day shade. So when we woke up in the morning, we decided to head right away to the town of Bateman's Bay, only 8 kms (5 miles) away.

I was busy getting things ready to go, and I heard Ruth yell about something.

"Dolphins.... there are dolphins in the river!"

Ruth had come back to get the camera, but by the time we got back to the water they were gone. She thinks there were three of them. And she said that one was so close she could hear it breathing through its blowhole!

The Clyde River is a tidal river.

It's strange to think about seeing dolphins in it though. From the shoreline here at the campsite it feels like you are on the shore of a lake, so you would never expect to see dolphins here!

We waited around for a while, but they didn't come back.

We drove into town, and parked across from the visitors center. It didn't take long to warm up with another bright blue sky and sunshine.

The lady in the visitors center knows the area really well and she gave us some good tips. We're actually going to go south for a few miles and then come back north to this area. There's just too much to see.

We walked along the scenic drive for about 5 kms (3 miles).

The Buoy and Sea statue.

Islands off the coast at Bateman's Bay.

After lunch, we had to get some things done. When you don't have many clothes with you, you need to do laundry on a fairly regular basis! And, we were due for showers again. We had asked at the visitors center about free showers (sometimes the local fisherman's clubs offer free showers), but she had said the only option was the fitness center and they charge $5 each. Well, you do what you have to do, so we headed over their with our shower gear. Either way, it would still be cheaper than paying to stay at a campground.

We get to the front counter, and the guy says "oh, just go ahead... no, you don't have to pay".

Nice!

Then, we had to figure out where to overnight. There are a few options in the area, but we were only 8 kms (5 miles) from the spot we were at last night, so we decided to head back here. Still only ourselves until just after dark when a vehicle showed up with a couple of young women camping.

Besides, maybe we will see some more dolphins in the morning!

    1. Thank you as well Scott! :-)

Yes we agree, the low season has been great. We did have a little while though where the weather was problematic but it was worth it not to have the crowds around.
