Our China trip plan... the planning is half the fun!

I spent much of the day yesterday doing trip planning for our upcoming three weeks in China.

We arrive in Chengdu on June 21st, and up until yesterday that was all we had planned or booked. We had an idea of some of the places we wanted to go, but didn't have a route or accommodations booked. That is now changed, although I'm not done yet!

Accommodation is relatively cheap, although prices rise substantially starting July 1st when a lot of the local population is on holiday. I booked us four nights in Chengdu. That's where the panda research and breeding centers are located.

Is this a museum? Nope... it's the hotel room I booked for our first four nights in China!

That hotel is costing us $41 CAD ($30 USD) per night and includes a big Chinese/Western buffet breakfast. Fantastic value for the money.

From there, we take the high speed train to Xi'an, another large city. There is a lot of hiking in the mountains outside of Xi'an, and they're accessible by day trip, so hopefully we'll get some exercise in. But the main attraction in Xi'an is the nearby Terracotta Warriors.

The Terracotta Warriors is a collection of approximately 8,000 life size soldiers, 130 chariots and 520 horses buried to protect an emperor who died around 230 BC. It is one of the most famous archeological discoveries ever, partially uncovered in 1974 and still excavating today. Looking forward to seeing that!

We are staying in a very modern hotel for five nights in Xi'an. It even has robot room service delivery! Again with breakfast included it's only $37 CAD ($27.50 USD) per night.

From there, we will be going to Wulingyuan National Park. We will either fly or take the train... haven't decided yet. And, we haven't booked the accommodation yet although I will likely get that done today.

Wulingyuan National Park.

We'll be there five nights and then either fly or train to Guilin where we will do the 80 kms (50 mile) river boat cruise to Yangshuo.

Scenery from the Li River boat cruise.

We've got five nights in Yangshuo and not a lot of plans, so we can just have some rest and relaxation there. Although I'm sure we'll find things to do!

From there, we take the high speed train to Hong Kong for three nights in the big city before flying from there to Tokyo.

Now that we've done some research, we're pretty excited about this trip to China! We look forward to showing you our own photos!
