Tepelena and the Peshtures Waterfall

Ruth and I had visited the Peshtures Waterfall a year and a half ago. It's known as the most beautiful waterfall in Albania, and both the drive up and the hike to get to it are pretty spectacular as well.

We were worried that we might get up there and there wouldn't be any water at this time of year!

But we took the chance because the scenery is worth it anyhow...

Scenery along the way.

Not much water in the river down below.

We drove by the Ali Pasha Aqueduct built in the early 1800's.

Looking upriver.

We stopped at a pulloff that offered views in all directions...

As I said earlier, Ruth and I were here a year and a half ago and we took lots of photos then. You can view that blog post here to compare the water then and now...

At the lower waterfall. Not nearly as much water as last year, but still pretty.

A spring coming right out of the wall of rock.

Tony, climbing up behind me to the upper waterfall.

First view of the waterfall.
Not as spectacular, but there is still water!

Looking straight down!

Kevin, at Peshtures Waterfall.

We headed back to the town of Tepelena to get a late lunch.

Scenery along the way.

Rock slide on the main road!

We had driven by Tepelena several times but never stopped in. It turns out that there's not much to see in the town itself. In fact for a Sunday, it was really dead. We did find somewhere to have some lunch... roast chicken, salad, and fries.

There is an old castle wall, but there's no castle. In fact inside the wall are modern homes that have nothing to do with what may have been inside the castle walls at some point.

And there is an interesting bridge over the Vjose River...

The base of the old bridge dates back to the 1st century BC.

We hiked down to the old bridge...

Another good day in Albania!

Today, we are off to visit The Blue Eye then to the coast at Ksamil, and Sarande.
