Trail closed

Son in law Justin took the kids to his sisters place yesterday after lunch, so we had some peace and quiet around the house. It was a warm afternoon, but later in the day we decided to go for a walk on the popular ravine trail in nearby Kentville.

We were surprised when we got there that there was nobody around. 

And the parking lot for the trail was blocked off.

Strange. But, we found some other parking and walked back to the trailhead where we found this...

Hmm.

But this kind of thing piques our curiosity. We've been on many hiking trails where conditions could be considered "dangerous". So we wanted to know what exactly made this one dangerous.

We recall one time in Cape Breton Highlands National Park many years ago where we went for a hike and there was a sign saying the trail was closed. We simply walked around the sign. Sure enough, we get to a point where there are a few trees down blocking the trail. And a bridge is down over a dried up river bed. And that was the only reasoning for closing the trail. So we tend to not pay too much attention to those types of signs.

The trail is fine so far.

But then we got to a part where they had rerouted a stream running through the ravine.

And there were quite a few garbage bags half filled with trash and some small piles of rusted steel and some old tires.

And really, you couldn't walk much further past where they were doing some work. But of course it was a Sunday, so there was nobody working.

Heading back.

It turns out there was a big rainstorm back in February that caused an unstable section of the ravine to collapse. The section that collapsed contained an old dump site and the contents of the dump spilled down into the ravine.

The land is owned by the federal government and leased to the town as recreation space. So the two government departments have been working together to clean up the landslide and re-open the trail. There is no timeline as to when that will happen, but it doesn't appear to be happening quickly.

Justin and the kids stayed overnight at his sisters, but this morning we are meeting them at 9:00am for a true Kevin and Ruth adventure! Full story tomorrow!
