A civilized way to buy wine!

They were calling for an afternoon storm, so we had a good breakfast and then headed out for a late morning hike. Gabi drove us up to a trailhead about 30 kms (18 miles) from Alba Iulia.

Only a short hike of about 4.5 kms (2.8 miles), but it was still some decent hills and another nice day.

Good to have a decent breakfast first!

A good breakfast to start the day.

This is where we are going.

Ruth and Gabi.

Small waterfall.

They put a cable to hold onto.

Heading up!

Here comes Ruth!

Nice little waterfall.

There are actually some steps carved into the rock behind the waterfall and you can make your way higher up into the canyon. The water is still pretty cold though, and we weren't really prepared for that!

We took another route up for a view.

Scenery along the way.

Ruth almost stepped on this small snake.
Gabi says it is not poisonous.

An ancient marker.
The area was inhabited by the Dacians 2,000 years ago.

Views.

There are more hikes that go further inland.

Can you see Ruth?

We had been up there.

When we were here in 2016, we remembered being able to buy wine at a shop where the wine was in big barrels, and you poured off what you wanted into various size containers. Gabi said he knew of a place similar to that, so on the way home we stopped in to have a look.

It is all very modern!

What a civilized way to buy wine. The girl is pouring out a taste for us to try. You find one you like, and she fills a container for you anywhere between one to five liters. It works out to about $2.75 CAD ($2.10 USD, €2.00) per liter! We love Romania!

In fact, we really do. Except for the fact that Romania has winter, we could easily live here. For us, it ranks right up there with Mexico and Albania as far as our favorite countries go.

  1. Albania & Mexico but not Turkey? Your extended travels there made it seem so attractive, would it be harder to be an expat there?

    1. Turkey would come in right after these three. We loved Turkey and wouldn't hesitate to go back and visit many times over but we just don't see ourselves living there. No, we don't think it would be harder to become an expat there, it just isn't in our top three spots for living full time.

    1. We love Romania! We have been there twice now and still want to go back to see more. The scenery is fantastic, the people are friendly, there is lots to see and do and the prices are great overall, oh and they have great wine! :-)
