Day trip to the silver town of Taxco

Yesterday, the group split up and did different things. Larry and Martha have their daughter and a friend visiting for a couple of days, and they planned a trip to the nearby silver mining town of Taxco. Denise, Jim, and Ruth decided to join them.

Bob and I stayed behind, as did Garth, Roy, and Sue. Roger and Mona, and Aron and Owenita went out for a 3 hour bike ride.

The Taxco group left around 10:00am.

I got caught up on some computer work in the morning, and then around 11:00am Bob and I walked into town to find a bank machine and a new engine battery for Roy and Sue's van. It turns out that the village of San Pedro has everything you would need... except a bank or an ATM! So we had to walk to the other side of the highway to the town of Xochi to find a bank. Then, we found a taxi to take us back to San Pedro where we checked a couple of automotive stores for a battery.

But, they didn't have the size we needed.

The taxi driver suggested we go about 7 kms north to a store that only does batteries, but we got there and it was closed. Right across the street was a dumpy looking automotive shop that didn't look well stocked, but we saw a stand with batteries so we went over to check it out.

We gave the guy the specifications of what we were looking for, and sure enough at the very back of the lower stand was exactly the battery we needed!

We arrived back at the campground with the battery. The taxi driver charged us 200 pesos ($14 CAD, $10.60 USD) for all that running around. Very fair.

Meanwhile, Ruth was gone to Taxco. It's an interesting town, and worth a visit. Ruth and I were there in January of 2013.

The steep narrow streets of Taxco.
Do not bring your RV here!

Scenery along the way.

Narrow alleyways to explore.

The church is definitely the centerpiece of the town.

Interesting balconies.

Lots of ornaments.

Church organ.

Larry, Caroline, Martha, and Emma.
Caroline is Larry and Martha's daughter and Emma is her friend.

Made with paper!

View of Taxco.

Lots of narrow steep streets!

This store has a lot of "stuff"!

Jim and Denise on the balcony.

They arrived back at the campground just after 5:00pm and we showed Caroline and Emma the game of LCR. They did not have beginner's luck though and Owenita was the big winner.

Today, the group is moving on to the ruins of Xochicalco. Not sure where we are going to spend the night, but we have some options. We're going to wing it, which may not be easy to do with a group of eight rigs!

  1. Need good brakes in that little town. Such beauty in every little town. We could learn from the Mexican people about bright and colorful decor.

    1. You sure would and a very small car!

One of the many reasons that we love Mexico so much, all the little towns here are so interesting, some more than others but we love them all and yes, we love the colour too. :-)

  2. I love bright colors...exterior house paint on mine is deep space blue with gray trim and a hot pink door called a hint of cherry. It use to be brown with a deeper brown trim and red door. So I love colorful Mexico and their bold colors :-)

  3. Just an FYI on your butterfly trip....The body of a missing Mexican butterfly conservationist and activist has been found, authorities confirmed.
Homero Gomez Gonzalez, 55, had been missing since January 13, police told CNN Espanol. He was found in Ocampo, Michoacán state, Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said at a Thursday press conference.

    1. We saw that in the news. It is uncertain about the cause of death but we have read several credible reports that they don't believe it was due to his activism against the illegal logging being done in the area.

  4. What a fascinating town! My shins hurt just imagining those steep streets, though. If you aren't used to climbing (or descending hills), the front of your shins can ache like crazy! But it looks fantastic! Kudos and hats off to Aron and Owenita for their bike ride. :-)

    1. I also bought our granddaughter Sadie some silver earrings while I was there. There is definitely no lack of silver jewellery or silver ornaments there. I think every second store is a silver shop. :-)
