Another job done!

When we took a walk around the park with some of the board of directors in the spring, we had been looking at various jobs that needed to be done. One of them was a big old tree stump by the beach that was pretty unsightly.

There had been a storm through here last year and a few trees had toppled over. They had cut them at the base, and most of them were okay to be left that way, but this one stump needed to go. Problem was, it was pretty big!

They said they would get someone in with some heavy equipment to dig it up. But I said I would pick away at it with a shovel and a chainsaw a little bit at a time and it would be gone before the end of the season. So that's what I did!

Kind of unsightly in the day use area.

A big tree stump has big roots too!

So there wasn't much going on yesterday and I had just cleaned and sharpened the chainsaw and wanted to see how it worked. So I went down to the old stump to make some more progress. Before I knew it, it was loose and ready to be pulled out! So I wrapped a chain around it, and me and my little tractor dragged it out of there.

This little tractor has come in handy. I've put about 20 hours on it this season.

That sure was a big chunk of wood!

And it left a pretty big hole.

But I filled it with a couple of buckets of gravel and then spread the sandy soil on top of it. Maybe if we're here next spring it will have settled and I can spread some topsoil and grass seed on the area.

Much better!

    1. it was definitely nice to have that "extra" power because we certainly couldn't have done it by ourselves.

    1. Only problem with that is it wouldn't fit in the fire rings, lol!

  4. I think you have had entirely too much fun with that tractor!!!

  5. You look like a proud little boy on the tractor, pulling that great big stump. And, isn't it ego-fulfilling when we complete a chore we 'committed to;' maybe even before we knew how hard it was going to be. Good work, Kevin.
Any word yet on the possibility for next year? Or are you and Ruth thinking of whether or not you'd like to be camp managers again?

    1. Yep, Kevin was bound and determined to get that stump out of there, so yes his is pretty happy with himself.

We haven't heard yet from the board yet, as to if they want us to return. Yes, we would definitely be camp managers again, if not here then somewhere else.

  6. Is this something you guys want to do again next summer? I'm sure they would love to have you back.

    1. Yes, we would consider returning next summer but I don't think we would commit to it yet, so much can change between now and the new year when we would probably have to give them our answer, if they were to ask us back.

  7. I got me a big ole stump out in front of the house where our elm tree packed it in a couple years ago. Not looking forward to try and excavate that thing. It sure is nice to have a few heavier tools at your disposal. The tractor is just the right size.

    1. Having the right tools certainly makes the job easier but even then you still have to use a lot of physical work too. I remember when we had an old crab apple tree outside of our old house and Kevin took it down and then we had to take the stump out. I think he worked at it all summer before it eventually came out.

  9. You sure saved them some bucks by doing it the old fashioned one, one little bit at a time.

  10. I told my wife, one of the things on my bucket list is to run a backhoe for a day. She just gave me that look, you know the one? We have all gotten it at some point.

    Cheers
