We're ready to order our Tilley hats!

We tried on some Tilley hats yesterday.

As much as it is surprising to find some Tilley hats for sale in the tiny city of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan (pop 35,000), we were not surprised that the selection wasn't great and that some of the hats were older discontinued models.

But we still had fun trying them on!

It was another quiet day here at the campground. A bit cool (20C, 68F) with enough of a breeze to keep boaters off the lake. So we took off in to town together for the first time since June.

Ruth likes the LTM8

Kevin, trying the LTM6C

I have to say, I actually like the look of the darker color hats better. And, some of the hat styles look better on than others do. But the main idea for us was practicality over looks. So while I might like the darker color ones better, it doesn't make sense when we're wanting hats for a super hot climate. Much better to have a light colored hat that doesn't attract as much heat from the sunlight.

The LTM6C has a hideaway neck cape that stows away, but it turns out that this is an older style and the cape part of it has been discontinued. The LTM6 is still available though, just without the hideaway cape.

Now that we've had a chance to try them on, it's easy to see why Tilley hats are called "the best hats in the world".

Lookin' good Ruth!

So, we've pretty much decided that it will be the LTM6 for Kevin, and the LTM8 for Ruth. They're actually very similar hats, but the LTM8 has the full mesh on the crown whereas the LTM6 has only a 3/4" mesh. We think we're better off having two different hats although the color scheme of "khaki with olive underbrim" will be the same.

  1. Gordon got a khaki coloured one and it really showed the sweat marks and they are almost impossible to remove. If your head sweats you need to wash them a lot.

    1. Yes, I've already read about that. It seems that if you sweat a lot it will cause you to wash it regularly no matter the color of the hat.

      Here's what Tilley suggests...

Some Tilley fans have had some success with Palmolive® dish detergent and warm, not hot, water. Once the Hat is wet you can pour the detergent directly on the stained area and use a medium to soft brush, even a toothbrush, to scrub the area. Rinse in cool water, reshape and let it air dry.

Alternately, you can try the same with shampoo. Most sweat stains are oily so you are trying to get the oil out and shampoo can be effective for that. Just don't use any detergents with whiteners etc. as they can damage the fabric.

    1. I know, I like the looks of some other styles a bit better too, but not the cowboy hat. We are going for functionality over looks or style!

  3. I love them both and it's great you've considered the HEAT you'll be in.

  4. I think you both look great in those hats. I just think you'll be sorry for not having a back neck cover piece. Hope not. I wear one all the time in the hot sun in the summer even over here. I'm surprised Tilley doesn't make more of those.

    1. Unfortunately there is no cape in either of the hats that we want but that is an easy fix, we just need a bit of cloth and a couple of safety pins and volia we have a back neck cape. Too be honest we are sort of surprised too!

  7. Kevin, I think your hat would look more stylish if you wore it lower on your forehead (a la Indiana Jones).

  8. Those are great hats. I have had my current one for years and it was free when I turned in my worn out last one:)
