We made our way to the popular tourist town of Voss, Norway.

We arrived here in Norway June 1st, and we depart July 26th. So we have a total of 56 days here. You'd think that's a lot of time, but for us it's not. We travel slowly. The half way point for this visit is June 28th.

Our plan was (and still is) to travel as far north as we can until the half way date, and then turn around and start heading south on the coastal route.

Here's our approximate route so far...

We arrived in Kristiansand, and are currently in Vossevangen.

If you use the + and - buttons on the lower right, you can see just how big Norway is compared to what we have done. And it's taken us 19 days to do that so far.

We were hoping to make it as far north as Vevang and the Atlantic Road but we don't see that happening in the next nine days. It's another 500 kms (300 miles) and you don't get anywhere fast in Norway. Or at least we don't!

We got up early yesterday morning and were on the road before 7:00am.

View crossing the Hardanger Bridge.

The toll fee for Max was 117 kr ($15.25 CAD, $11.70 USD).
The tolls are all electronic and automatically charged to your licence plate or transponder.

You enter and exit the bridge from a tunnel.
Once we exited the bridge, we did almost 8 kms (5 miles) inside a tunnel.

Scenery once we exited the tunnel.

Scenery along the way.

We arrived in the town of Vossevangen (more popularly called Voss), which is a popular tourist town located on the main rail and highway routes between the cities of Oslo and Bergen.

But we couldn't find any free parking. We hate paying for parking when there is (almost) always a free possibility that might mean a longer walk (or bike ride) to the center of town. But not in this town! And parking is not cheap, at 15 kr ($2 CAD, $1.50 USD) per hour.

I found somewhere temporary and left Ruth with Max while I walked to the tourist office. I spoke to the girl there who explained that parking is free after 3:00pm on Saturday, and all day on Sunday. So it turned out we were just a little early, but otherwise it seemed our timing was pretty good because we hadn't actually made a plan to arrive here on a weekend.

One of the reasons we stopped at this town is to do some bike riding. They have a nice network of paved bike trails. Unfortunately, the weather isn't cooperating.

Anyhow, they have a propane (LPG) fill station just outside of town, and a motorhome dump station, so we decided to go make use of them. I filled one of Max's propane tanks for 275 kr ($36 CAD, $27 USD) which was actually cheaper than I thought it was going to be. It had cost $30 CAD in Germany, and $23 CAD in Romania.

We found a spot by a football (soccer) field outside of town where we did some computer work until after 3:00pm, then we went back into Voss for a wander around. We wore our rain coats. The whole day it had been raining for twenty minutes, then clearing for twenty minutes. Then repeat.

Rain one minute, clearing the next.

The Thai food truck. Cheapest place in town for food.

When we were in Iceland in 2012, we remember that Asian food was the cheapest. Fortunately we have Max with us in Norway, so no need for expensive restaurants.

The stone church was built in 1271, and the wooden octagonal steeple was added in the 1500's.
Unfortunately it was locked.

One of the highlights of Voss is the Fleischer's Hotel.

Fleischer's Hotel has been in operation since 1864, however the original building was destroyed by fire two weeks after it was renovated in 1888. The current building opened in 1889, but has also been added to and renovated many times over the years.

We went inside and had a little tour.

The lounge.

It's almost a museum inside.

Fleischer's Hotel.

We went back to Max late afternoon and played some backgammon and had dinner. It cleared up again for a few minutes around 8:00pm so we went for another walk.

The lake level is high.

A little bit of flooding.

The river is high too.

These people have a beautiful property.

Yet another old phone booth that has been turned into a lending library.

The rain is supposed to disappear by lunchtime, so hopefully we'll get out for a bike ride this afternoon!

    1. Nope, we try real hard to not let the weather stop us from doing things. Luckily we do get some breaks in between the showers. :-)

  2. It is so pretty there, and I would love to live in that house on the water...stunning! I hope you are able to get a bike ride in between rains. Feel free to send some of that rain to North Carolina -- we could use it. :) And Happy Father's Day to Kevin!

    1. It is very pretty here indeed! Too bad it is such an expensive country and that they get winter because if it weren't for those two things, we could easily live here.

Yes, we did get out for a very scenic bike ride yesterday afternoon. Kevin will have the post up on that ride a little later today.

If we could send you some of this rain, we gladly would. Bergen, Norway on average gets 239 rainy/snowy days, and the rest of the country isn't too much different, although the coast does get more rain than snow. Luckily, we have managed to get out most days for some type of exercise, either walking.hiking or biking.

Kevin, says thank you for the Father's Day wishes, he enjoyed the bike ride, it was the next best thing to celebrating the day with our children. :-)
