Back where we started

Someone asked the other day why we don't spend more time in one place. Well number one reason is that we like to explore. We aren't "destination" people... for us, the enjoyment is in the journey, not the destination.

But it gets more complicated than that from a logistics perspective. When we are traveling in a motorhome, we rarely need to make plans for where we are going to overnight. But traveling by car and using Airbnb accommodation, we need to book onward lodging. We've learned that we normally like staying in one spot for at least a week, but possibly two weeks depending on how much we think there is to do in the area.

And sometimes, it's a bit of a risk. When we book a two week stay, we're pretty much locked in. If you leave early, you don't get a refund of any kind, so there would need to be a pretty serious reason for that to happen. And if we only book one week and we happen to want to stay longer, it's possible that someone else could already have booked when you want to make that decision.

Besides, even when we're at a place that we like, two weeks is enough for us. There is too much to see out there!

Yesterday, we did a fairly long drive back to Fethiye. It was only 240 kms (150 miles), but we took some back roads that were slow going, and we stopped along the way. We left at 10:30am and arrived at about 4:30pm.

About 40 kms (24 miles) on this narrow rural road.

Aegean Sea coastline.

The water is so clear!

Scenery along the way.

We stopped for lunch in the small resort town of Ören. A couple of weeks ago we had seen Ören from the top of a nearby mountain, so we're glad we got to see it up close. It would be a great stop for a few days in a motorhome!

A nice quiet resort town.

Even in busy season, we think this would be a nice spot. it's far enough out of the way that the masses won't be there.

Nice beach.

Would be great for a swim on a hot day.

Dry camping area.

We had some lunch then went for a half hour walk to stretch our legs. But we still had a couple of hours driving ahead of us.

Beautiful.

More scenery.

As we got closer to Fethiye, we could see some of the mountains in the distance. One thing has changed since we were here a month ago... there is now snow on the mountains! Our host here said that it rained a few days ago, and that must have left snow at higher elevations.

It is now getting cold at higher elevations, so we won't be spending any more time inland. The rest of the trip here will likely be spent pretty close to the southern coast.

Snow in the mountains.

Beautiful viewpoint near Fethiye.

More snow.

We arrived back at the same apartment with the nice view and the friendly host. We had originally wanted to spend a second week here when we first arrived, but as I said earlier, it happened that somebody else already had it booked. We managed to squeeze another three nights in right now before heading further southeast to Kas.

Here is an overview of where we have been for the last five weeks...

Now zoom out and you get a better perspective of how big the country of Turkey is.

Today, is a relax day in preparation for a big hike on Monday!

  1. I suppose this portion of your journey makes you appreciate all the more the pleasure of traveling in a RV, with the freedom it allows and the different experiences it provides! Plus, I never figured to what extent Turkey was a very large country! Thanks for your posts! Always appreciated!

    1. It certainly does! We do miss having an RV, especially when you are in a country that we know would be very easy to travel in with a motorhome. We don't mind doing things the way we are but we know the experience would be all the better in the motorhome and cheaper.

Turkey is a big country, but then because we travel so slowly most countries seem to be big when we look back at how much ground we actually cover, lol.

    2. Another way to look at the size of Turkey is that it's a little bigger than Saskatchewan.

    3. Lol, except that there is way more to see in close proximity to each other than there is in Saskatchewan!

  2. Hello Kevin and Ruth

Can you explain how you placed a semi-live map in the text please. What caught my eye was being able to zoom in and out.

    1. It took me some effort to figure it out!

From google maps, click the drop down menu and then click on "Share or embed map". Click on Embed a map, and copy the link.

In the blogger edit program, once you are at the point where you want to insert the map, you need to toggle from "Compose" view to "HTML" view. The toggle is underneath the "Title". Then paste the link text that you copied into the form. Toggle back to "Compose" view, and the map box will be there, but without the map. When you publish, the map will show.

  3. If and when you return to Turkey with the Motorhome there will still be a lot of territory to explore. Beautiful Scenery.

    It's about time.

    1. It is pretty amazing when you look at where we have traveled and then you look at the big picture, it then seems like we have hardly gone anywhere!

Yuck! We are glad that the snow we are seeing is up in the mountains here, at least at the moment it is. We hope that you don't get too much of that white stuff.

    1. Glad to hear that we aren't the only people that like to travel that way! We always find though that we run our of time and there is still so many places that we wanted to see but never got around to it. We are definitely looking forward to returning to Turkey in our motorhome. :-)
