Booked another flight ticket!

This time, it's for our return flight back to Ottawa at the end of September. Of course we have those $800 each travel vouchers from our Air Canada flight bump experience a couple of weeks ago. But just because they were given to us doesn't mean we would squander them.

So yesterday I saw that the Regina To Ottawa flight had dropped from $323 CAD to $191 CAD. To put that in perspective, we had paid $235 CAD each for our flight from Ottawa to Regina a couple of weeks ago.

As soon as I saw the price, I got on the phone, with travel vouchers in hand!

But that $191 CAD ($145 USD) one way flight was a bit of an oddball route. Oh well...we don't care. For that price, we'll take it.

Using the vouchers, we still had to pay the taxes. So the one way flight cost us $36 each! And, we still have $645 each left on our vouchers!

But as I said, the route is an oddball one. They will fly us Regina to Calgary where we pick up passengers, then to Edmonton where we change planes. Then a red eye flight to Ottawa where we land at 5:38am!

Oddball route from Regina to Ottawa.

Ha...sometimes I think we really are crazy! For $35 more, we could have taken a direct flight. Too funny.

On to other things.

The electric dump box lift on our big Gator started acting funny. We use the dump box a lot when we're doing spring cleanup. In fact, we use it a lot throughout the summer. Anyhow, it got stuck in the "up" position, so I took it up at the shop and dismantled it. Turns out there is an electronic relay control built into the top of the actuator motor, and that's what has gone bad.

Yesterday we did a drive into Swift Current and I stopped by the John Deere dealer to get a price on a replacement. You can't buy the relays separately so I knew it was going to be expensive... but $1,300? Both the parts guy and myself laughed out loud. He even double checked it against the U.S. pricing, and sure enough it comes out at $850 USD in the states. Yikes. So I'm going to make some calls and see if I can buy the electronic box separately from the manufacturer of the actuator. But somehow I doubt it.

Busy day in town yesterday as we did lots of running around both for the park and ourselves. We had left here just before 10:00am and didn't get back until just after 5:00pm!

We bonused at one of the grocery stores. They had all of their gluten free bread and tortillas at 50% off.

Jackpot!

We bought them all and put them in the freezer!

Only in Swift Current!

Our owls yesterday.

Here's a hot deal... normally sells for around $100...

  1. The owls have such character! Do the parents take turns hunting and bringing food back to the nest like eagles do? The baby is sure an adorable ball of fluff right now! Great buy on the gluten free breads. I never see deals like that on gluten free items here.

    1. They sure do! We never see the dad only the mom, who spends all her time in the nest. We still aren't sure if there may be another little one there because of the amount of time she spends in the nest. I have read though, that the father will start to come in a dusk with food for mom and the baby so, I am sure that he is hanging around and helping out.

We don't normally see deals on the gluten free items but we find that the Real Canadian Warehouse Club discounts items at 50% off when it is close to it's date due. With the bread and tortillas we put them straight into the freezer so it's no big deal to us because I always toast the bread and warm up the tortillas first anyways.

    1. We won't make them come out at that hour unless they want to! What's another hour sitting around the airport, as long as there is WiFi we are happy. :-)

  4. If you are on Air Canada I assume you have Aeroplan - don't kid yourself, these flights add up and you get even more mileage for this type of route. Even if you never get enough or a free flight they have gift certificates that are pretty nice for things like gas/restaurants/amazon. Hubby rarely takes them and still ends up with a GC or two a year (usually flies WJ within Canada)

    1. We don't have Aeroplan but we do have Copa Connects Miles and they partner with Air Canada so we get airmiles with them and yes they add up.

  5. Probably won't get bumped off the plane since tickets bought way in advance....I read 9 Spirit flights were cancelled in U.S. Flights in USA are getting crazy.

    1. Rita, I read about that--a brawl broke out at the Spirit Airlines desk in Fort Lauderdale by the passengers who had boarded and then were deplaned because there was no pilot to fly the plane. There was also a long line of Spirit passengers attempting to check in for their flight, and the brawl spilled over into the line of waiting passengers. It seems that the Airline Pilots Association has not been able to agree on a contract since 2015 with Spirit, and the Association recently has been putting pressure on its rank and file members not to accept "open time" from the airline. Open time is when an airline brings additional airplanes in service during a high passenger traffic period without hiring a corresponding pilot for each plane; the airlines declare "open time" to its currently employed pilots to fly those routes for double the pay (one might call it overtime). It's a totally volunteer situation for the pilots. Looks like no one volunteered!

    2. Nope, probably won't get bumped but if they are looking for volunteers to be bumped then we will up at the desk like a shot to let them know we will be willing to wait for a later flight. :-)

    1. Yep, we don't really mind the inconvenience and we have lots of time so why not save a few more dollars.

Yep, love being able to get a deal on GF items.

  8. I don't know how hard it would be to set up a live feed camera for the owl nest, but it could turn out to be the next giraffe birth!

    1. We have thought about that but nobody is here at the park to set the camera up in February/March when she would be setting up nest for the upcoming laying of eggs. It would be fun to see though!
