Made it to San Antonio!

Well, we're only 160 miles (260 kms) from the Mexico border! We'll do some last minute preparations today, and then head for Laredo for tonight and cross the border tomorrow morning.

We're always impressed with the roads here in Texas. Even the back roads have speed limits of 65 or 70 mph. Some of them are even 75 mph (123 km/h). We never drive that fast, because we like to get the best fuel mileage, but it gives an indication of the condition of the roads.

The entire drive down from Canada, we have set the cruise control at somewhere between 55 and 60 mph. And we have been passed by virtually everybody. Seems 99% of the people want to go as fast as possible without any regard for fuel mileage. If I ever hear anybody here in the U.S. complain about the price of gas, I will remind them that they could easily save 10% to 20% simply by slowing down!

Hardly anybody on the backroads because most people are on the Interstate.

Back roads of Texas.

Even the back roads have nice picnic areas.

Scenery along the way.

We came into San Antonio around 5:00pm so we got to see the rush hour traffic heading out of the city center. Glad we don't have to put up with that every day!

Bumper to bumper rush hour traffic. Glad we're going in the opposite direction!

We arrived at our couchsurfing hosts Bea and David's at around 5:15pm and they had let us know ahead of time that they were heading out for a meeting around that time. We got there just in time to say hello and goodbye and we just relaxed for a couple of hours before they returned and we all had a nice dinner together. Once again, there's never a shortage of good conversation with fellow couchsurfers and we enjoyed our short time together.

We need to stock up on some more gluten free products for Ruth, and do some last minute dealings on Mexican car insurance. Then we're off to Laredo!

Yesterday's drive, 270 miles (430 kms).

    1. Hi Elaine, unfortunately this time we did not go to downtown San Antonio. We would have loved to do it again, the River Walk is lovely. We did do it back in November of 2008 as well as the Alamo, here is our post on it www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2008/11/tilden-texas.html
