New Orleans (day 2)

Wednesday February 27...9:00pm

Very peaceful here at Bayou Segnette State Park. Considering we're pretty close to New Orleans, we didn't hear a thing last night. And I don't think it got quite as cold as it was supposed to, but we still put the little electric heater on as soon as we got up this morning.

And so we tried to figure out how to get to downtown New Orleans and back to the park. They DO NOT have a decent public transit system here. Very confusing, and not regular service. We ended up taking a taxi from the park entrance to the Canal Street ferry for $23.00. The ferry was free for pedestrians, and dropped us across the Mississippi river right at the French Quarter. From there, we wandered around. It would sure be interesting to be here during Mardi Gras. It is certainly party city. The bars are open 24 hours a day, and you`re welcome to drink on the streets providing your drink is not in a glass container. So we walked down Bourbon St., to the French Market area and saw the cathedral and museums, but weren`t enthusiastic about anything enough to want to pay any money to do it. We did have a decent lunch though...I had a beer, Ruth had a glass of milk, and we shared a plate of Jumbalaya and each had a side salad...for $15.40...not bad.

Then, we had to try and get back to the park from downtown. We were too cheap to pay for another cab ride, so we found a tourist office that gave us some more info on the local bus. We finally found one that was going our way, but we got off too soon. We decided we could walk from there to the park...and we did...for about 2 hours! Didn`t make it back to Sherman until almost 6:30, and that was after getting the park ranger to drive us in the back of his pickup from the park office to our campsite. We were exhausted.

And so now I have to get up at around 4am in order to fly to Syracuse to meet Alex. The taxi is picking me up here at 4:30am to bring me to the airport for my 6:00am flight. I see the forecast for Syracuse is cold and snowy! I am not looking forward to that, but I am looking forward to spending some time with Alex because I haven`t seen him since last September.
