New Orleans, Louisiana

Tuesday February 26...10:15pm

No problems at the Walmart last night. We had a bit of rain overnight, but it was still 21C inside the motorhome when we woke up this morning, so it didn't cool off much. That could change though...they are calling for a cold spell for tonight.

Our plan today was to make it to Black Bayou Swamp Tours, located about 60 miles from here towards New Orleans, which is about another 60 miles past that. We made it to the Swamp Tour place with no problems, but then found out that because we're in low season, the boats don't go out on a regular basis and you're supposed to make a reservation to do so. Well we had tried by email and didn't get a response, but just figured we'd wing it. No such luck. Besides, we found out that the alligators kind of go into hiding when the temperature drops below 70F and it's definitely below that when we showed up there. No worries, we'll save the swamp tour thing for maybe Florida and do it with Lindsey and Justin when they visit in a week and a half or so.

So we continued on towards New Orleans. We ended up at the Bayou Segnette State Park. We're actually a day ahead of when we figured we'd get here, but now we'll take the opportunity to take the local bus into downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter and see some of the touristy things here. It's a nice park, and only about half an hour from downtown. They're still recovering from Katrina, with lots of new little trees planted all over. Not that busy, probably about 25% full. We'll stay parked here (at $18 a night) until Monday March 3rd, while I head to Boston to visit a school with Alex. Ruth and Whiskey have a nice safe place to stay for the next few days until I return.

Very windy as I write this, and we have an expected low of around 3C. Might have to get the extra blanket out!
