We've been eating a lot of different foods here!
With a century egg, some other kind of egg, ginger, green onion, and dried pork on rice porridge...
Not really something we would normally have for breakfast, but we thought it was pretty good!

We stayed in for the morning, because we had a hike planned with Denis, a fellow Canadian, at 4:00pm.
But we went out for a walk around town, and to find somewhere to have lunch. We ended up at a cafeteria style Indian place that had a nice chicken curry.

With a glass of lemonade each, the total was RM26 ($5.60 USD, $7.50 CAD) for the two of us!
At 4:00pm, Denis arrived to pick us up. He's a Canadian, but hasn't lived in Canada for about 40 years! Funny coincidence, he's originally from a farm near Kyle, Saskatchewan which is only about 75 kms (46 miles) from Cabri Regional Park which is where we worked for four summers between 2014-2017. He's been living here in Penang since 2019, but has previously lived and worked in Brunei and Australia.
We drove over to the Penang Botanic Gardens where many trails begin. Denis took us on the one leading to Penang Waterfall.
This is a tall tree that develops these funny coconut things near the base, it is commonly called a cannonball tree.
It starts off with these flowers. Very strange.

Made it to the waterfall.
After the waterfall, we continued higher up this steep trail.
And across this bridge.

This gives you a better idea of how big the roots are.
They grow big lily pads here too!

He knew of a "western" food restaurant on the way back and t's actually called "Western Village" and it's walking distance from our homestay. I can't believe I didn't see it when I was searching out restaurants in the area. So we stopped in there for dinner. Denis gave us some tips for some more hikes to do in the area, so we're off to do some more of that today!

What a beautiful hike! Love the foliage, flowers, and the lily pads with turned-up edges. Interestingly, I was watching a new episode of "Chopped" last night on Food Network, and one of the chefs was from Malaysia originally. She would be familiar with all the interesting foods you're eating there!
ReplyDeleteIt was another great hike and it was nice to have Denis lead the way. I think he knows these trails like the back of his hand now. The foliage is definitely interesting lots of different trees, plants and flowers. I especially loved those lily pads. I have see pictures of them before but I have never seen them in real life before.
